Free Comic Book Day (May 3rd, 2008)
Yesterday was my first time experiencing Free Comic Book Day! Photos and Mission Report are after the cut!
Since I'm not really into reading comic books (I leave that up to my guy) I had never been familiar with the event.. that is, before I joined the Legion. It was tons of fun! We volunteered at the local comic book shop "Comic Heaven" (which I go to occasionally) for several hours (11-5), and we just kind of mingled with customers and posed for photos with people. It was laid back and extremely entertaining. Everyone who worked at the shop was really sweet. We had access to their office to change, take a break, and freshen up whenever we needed, and they provided pizza and cupcakes for us, too!
When we arrived in the morning, it was just Darthmitsy, myself, and Jeremy in the store. Darthmitsy had finished her Wonder Woman outfit and she looked gorgeous! The costume is so impressive. I really admire all of the work she put into it. Jeremy was Han as always, and I got to use my Ceremonial Leia again.
There was already quite a large crowd lining up outside when we arrived. Jeremy and I got there a little before the shop opened, so we were allowed inside, of course. They had a really nice selection of free comic books, as well as some other goodies (posters, shirts, hats, pins, etc) for certain movies like Prince Caspian and Iron Man. I got a few goodies for myself, as the shop owners said we were more than welcome to take what we'd like. We got things in order before the shop opened, and people started filing in.
There was a pretty steady stream of people for the majority of the day, with a few slow spots probably due to the rainy, cold, weather. At one point, it was absolutely pouring, but near the end of the day, we got a good hour of sunlight and warmth so we could take some better photos. As the day progressed, we were joined by Rija_Jinn in his Darth Vader costume and Fuzzball with his Jedi. For the last couple of hours, Charkboy (Jack Sparrow), Mike (Biker Scout), and Coyote (Boba) joined us after they had attended Free Comic Book Day in North Olmstead. As always, Charkboy was downright entertaining as Jack Sparrow... it was hilarious watching him mingle with all of the customers. Everyone else looked fantastic, too!
Of course, seeing people's reactions was my favorite aspect of the event. Everyone from little kids to older adults were excited to see everyone in costume. Vader scared quite a few little kids, as always... lol. Probably a few adults too, actually. He garnered the most attention throughout the day, which is no surprise, as Vader is always "the rockstar." As usual, the little girls flocked to me and Darthmitsy for photos. Everyone got a lot of sweet compliments throughout the day, and it's always such a blast to mingle and chat with everybody for hours on end.

After the event, we all had a very nice group dinner at the Cracker Barrel... of course, we mostly chatted about future costumes, events, and conventions. I might be getting in on a Pirates of the Caribbean costume group at the Medieval Faire this year... time-permitting. But we'll see how that goes once I look into it more. Free Comic Book Day was such an awesome event (and very stress-free!) and I can't wait until Motor City in a couple of weeks, when I get to see my Rebels again.
