Big news on the Zanne front, folks! One of my stories is going to be published! It's called Misfit Prophets Beneath a Bankrupt Sky and will be published by
Inkstained Succubus Press in time for the holidays, if the editing gods be kind.
What's it about, you ask?
Raymond Hollingsworth and Isaac Sorensen have been living under assumed names for the past several years, traveling with a rundown carnival in order to forge a new life, safe from the ones that would tear them apart. Born the sons of privilege in 1930’s New York, their families had been business and political rivals for as long as anyone could remember. Over a random meeting at a political fundraiser, a relationship is born - a relationship that could never be accepted by their parents or the society they live in.
It takes a while for Raymond to break past Isaac’s defenses and to earn a place in his heart and in his trust. They plan to escape to Hollywood to start a new life, free of familial obligations. As they grow even closer, Raymond discovers how special Isaac truly is, a secret talent only Isaac’s closest family members suspect. Isaac can see the future, not that it does him much good when it comes to his own father’s machinations. Mr. Sorensen’s plan to get Isaac back on the path to the White House goes awry, Isaac’s sacrifice to keep Raymond safe leaving Isaac irreparably damaged.
Following their original plan, Raymond makes his escape with Isaac, though Hollywood isn’t their final destination. With limited money and even more limited prospects, they wind up at a traveling carnival, Isaac’s gifts the only chance they have to earn a buck in the midst of the Great Depression. With Raymond serving as Isaac’s mouthpiece, they play the role of brothers Thomas and Matthew Armstrong, oracles for Morgan’s Mystical Menagerie. Along with an alligator man, Siamese twins, a bearded lady, and assorted other carnies, Raymond and Isaac make a life for themselves traveling from town to town, passing out fortunes to whomever has the dime to pay them.
They’ve made themselves something like a family out on the road, though even amongst their fellow oddities there are those that can’t be trusted. When their secret is exposed, Raymond is surprised to find that Isaac isn’t as helpless as he appears.
