It's also egg- and milk-free, if you're cooking for someone with allergies.
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups cold water
3/4 cups cooking oil
1 tablespoon white vinegar
Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Pour in the water, oil, and vinegar, and mix with a wooden spoon until everything is moistened. Some lumps are okay.
Pour into a greased pan or pans and bake at 350 degrees F until done, about 30 minutes depending on the size of the pans. This makes one thick 9x13 inch cake or two thick 9 inch layers.
