Catherine Feeny

We saw her on Sunday in Manchester. Went to the curry mile first, which was cool, though accidental! The bus driver wouldn't stop where we needed to be and let us off outside a nice restaurant.

The support acts were "The Challenge of Feral Green" who I liked - two guys doing harmonies, one on guitar, the other on guitar/piano. They were both good singers and can be found on myspace I think. It did sometimes make the songs sound as if they had both been with the same woman, but that was funny! We were right in the centre of the front row which led to some scary eye contact!

The other guy was called Jacob Golden, I didn't like him as much. It was him and his guitar, with a voice reminiscent of Johnny Depp in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". He did some interesting experimentation with sound, but it wasn't my thing.

Then Catherine and her band came on. She did almost all her album songs, and then one by Phil Collins which was a good cover I thought, although I haven't listened to his album since being locked in a car with my parents. She was really good, clearly very pleased that there were people to see her at all. Which was impressive since some of them seemed to be either drunk or special needs and seemed to think that Catherine wanted to hear a lot from them. At one point someone was talking through much of a new song, so I shushed him (I'd refrained for most of the night)and he called me a cow! Though he did later say "I didn't mean any disrespect". Hmmm.

She sounds pretty much like she does on the album, which is very good so the gig wasn't disappointing, except that it was short.

Afterwards we went to buy The Challenge of Feral Green's LP and got Catherine's autograph. I was just telling her that she is played on my work radio station every day (which was news to her) when a woman literally pushed me out of the way to talk to her (pushing in front of various others also). Catherine looked very scared, lol. She grabbed my arm to apologise as the woman launched into some kind of monologue. At that I went home, bemused but happy.

Sadly, the guy next to me took loads of photos and gave me his myspace address, but I lost it :o( Unusually for me, I didn't take any. Grr.
