I had a great weekend training and learning specifics about how to be a better teacher.
Then I had an interesting conversation on the airplane with a teacher who was sitting beside me and I voiced an opinion of mine that really resonated with her (and me) and I thought I should write it down.
None of us has the choice about whether or not we are role models. That is the choice of those who choose to look up to us and we will never know all of the people whom we will influence, subtlety or directly.
Our only choice is whether or not we will choose to be positive and responsible role models or negative and irresponsible role models. Most of us never consider the impact of most our choices when we make them; instead we usually make them for purely selfish or else habitual reasons, and yet the subtlest of decisions can have significant ramifications upon ourselves and upon those who imitate us, for better and for worse.
