Salmonella Tomatoes!

Yum! Good time to buy tomatoes and make some canned (jarred?) marina for storage, I'm thinking. They're gonna be cheap!

Read carefully.

Is there a reason to be afraid? Not in my opinion. First, if you do the most environmentally sound thing and buy local, this is pretty much a non-issue in a large list of states (including California). I, for one, seldom purchase non-local tomatoes, which does mean that I only use canned tomatoes for significant parts of the year.

Second, who in their right minds buy's pre-sliced tomatoes?! Research has shown me that some of the spread of this in the past has been due to restaurants and fast food joints doing this. Talk about cross contamination risks!

Third, why a recall? I mean, why can't the FDA just educate people? If the tomato skin is unbroken, wash the damn thing! If the skin is broken, cook the damn thing! I mean, not a single death has occurred and only 23 hospitalizations, yet we let how many people die in drunk driving incidents every day without recalling alcohol or taking away the drunk drivers license!? WTF are people thinking?

global panic
