But how can you forget that I was the one who told you about "The Professionals" in the first place (I think)?
This is funny, because you and faramir_boromir each claim to have introduced me to the fic that the other introduced me to! She thought she told me about TAS, and I did meet her at mannazone, but it was your LJ entry about TAS that led me to check it out (you really wrote a great description - manna should hire you for PR!), and I was amazed. It is, without doubt, the very best story I've read on the internet, and I'm not at all surprised it's being published. Brilliant, smart, creative original story with some of the most memorable characters I've ever encountered in ANY genre of fiction, including movies, TV and novels. I think manna mentioned at mannazone that she is working on another original story, but isn't going to post it until it's completed. I hope that's the case. She is remarkably talented.
But although you did indeed introduce me to TAS, it was faramir_boromir 's LJ post of her top ten Pros stories that introduced me to The Professionals fanfic. I'd never heard of the show or the fandom, but I really liked the premise and the guys. I should have known you'd be a fan!
Great series, that generated some great fic. I like especially the stories that get the British language, the London setting and the lifestyle of the period right.
I've decided to order the DVDs and actually watch the show, although I imagine it will be quite disappointing to me that Bodie and Doyle aren't really lovers! I've never read any slash until recently, and then it was literary slash, mostly characters from novels written and/or set in 18th century England. You know - stories about characters like Hornblower or Mr. Darcy. I was very amused, and have convinced one of the fanfic writers I like to write a story set in Regency England. Can't wait until she starts it. I love fiction set in the Georgian and Regency periods. Not so much Victorian, although I love the novels of Dickens and George Eliot.
Anyway, I love the Pros fanfic, and am amazed at how many really good writers there are in that fandom, some of whom are fairly new to it. And as you point out, the best writers really give you a feeling of the place and time - so you learn about the music, the gadgets, the cars, and those whacky clothes and hairstyles a person would see in London in the late '70s and early '80s.
As an American, one of the strangest things about the fanfic is the public reaction to the fact that the guys are armed. It's apparently very shocking to people, because even the police weren't armed. Obviously there's an entirely different attitude towards firearms in the US. I even read a news article sometime this year about a town in the state of Georgia that has an ordinance ReQUIRING all residents of the town to own a gun!
