my engine's ready to explode, explode, explode

Sep 18, 2012 12:22

Less than 48 hours ago, aside from the usual minor things of life, all was right with my local world, my car (the 2006 Subaru Outback we acquired last year), and our bank account, and xuth was driving home from Boston after having picked up his carload of stuff from the burning man shipping truck post-playa ( Read more... )

I was thinking a lot about you yesterday, and privately whinging that Danville was closer-but-not-close-enough to you guys. And while you're on the way to go get the car, and I'd love to stop in and maybe crash, I suspect you may be already off to eastern pastures by then. :(

Aw, that is very nice, and I would really enjoy seeing J. I'll see if we can make that work. Could I get his email? (or have him email blk@lj) as I don't think I have it.

We'd have to borrow a car to get up there anyways, so no worries about that part from your side.

----- This happened, with apparently minimal warning signs. Can I add more minuses?

This specific thing is what I have the most problems with. I was driving along and things went from no apparent problems to "check engine" light coming on and things failing over the course of what felt like seconds and was certainly no more than a minute. And I'm pretty sure it was much less than that.

I'm still having problems dealing with that aspect of things. I'm typically very attuned to how mechanical things feel and sound and know when they're not in the best of condition (even if I'm ignoring it at that moment). But this time I had nothing.

Sorry to hear all the details. I initially belived Xuth to have been driving his Saturn. I now understand
it was the Suburu. Well handled, all around. And kudos to you both for superior interpersonal
communication.

When my engine spontaneously developed a problem earlier this year, it didn't even bother to give me the check engine light, just started making obviously-wrong noises and causing the car to shudder if I applied too much gas. Fortunately, I was only just on the highway coming out of my neighborhood, so I got off at the first exist south of home and pulled into a gas station I already knew was there... (Turned out to be something wrong with the mechanism that timed the spark plugs. I forget the details.)

Subarus are known for cracked head gaskets, but that's an issue that comes slowly normally, and you'd get low oil pressure long before the engine melts down. Any clue what hidden problem may have been lurking that suddenly exploded?

oh how awful! i'm glad it was as un-awful as it was, all considered. cars. they are problematic.

(the head gasket thing scares me too.)

Is that what they call "living in interesting times"? Not fun, but it sounds like you guys handled it well.

Our car was in the shop for six weeks once, and we were immensely grateful to live in a place where we could both get to work by bus. We sometimes rented cars on weekends to get to parties and go grocery shopping, but that was a luxury and not strictly necessary.
