There are two things I'm smug about right now:
- Even though my copies of Pokémon Black and White arrived a day late, I still had them a day before pretty much everyone in the US.
- I encountered and caught my first shiny of Gen V on my second day of playing, 20 hours into the storyline.
It's a female Naive Durant, tentatively nicknamed Cassie. I don't like Durant, and she has Swarm so she wouldn't be much competitive use even if I trained her... but my first shiny of Gen III took more than 7 years (Laney the shiny Linoone on Emerald was caught last week, and I bought Sapphire a couple of days after UK launch), so I am happy.
My team, which I planned out right after beating the Black storyline in Japanese, and their current movesets:
Elgar (male Samurott, Mild) - Surf / Waterfall / Megahorn / Grass Knot
So named because of his final form's
impressive moustache. I wasn't intending to do theme naming on this run-through - normally I save that for replays and EV-trained teams - but it just seemed to fit this guy. (Conveniently, most of the Pokémon I settled on were male. Do you know how impossible it is to think of female classical composers without resorting to Wikipedia?) Honestly, I can believe the people who claim Oshawott is the easiest starter, although I haven't tried Tepig yet. As icing, I didn't even need to reset for a workable nature! He evolved as soon as we left Striaton, having learnt Razor Shell just prior, which is absurdly powerful early on. His stats started to lag after single-handedly sweeping Clay, though; even evolving couldn't fix that.
Mozart (male Leavanny, Jolly) - Swords Dance / Leaf Blade / X-Scissor / Slash
Seriously cool. Also kind of frail, so he tends to get KOed before he can finish setting up. He's great if he does get to +4 or higher, although his speed is slightly underwhelming. I didn't go out of my way to raise his happiness and let him faint a couple of times, but he was still useful against Team Plasma (haha, Sandiles) and evolved before we left Nimbasa.
Holst (male Krookodile, Jolly) - Crunch / Rock Slide / Brick Break / Bulldoze
I tried to get one with Moxie, only it took so long to find one that wasn't Relaxed or Quiet that I just ran with him. He sweeps handily enough without it, but Intimidate doesn't help him survive much. It would've been nice. Oh, and it takes a while for him to get Earthquake, but I don't mind that too much.
Barbara (female Darmanitan, Lonely) - Fire Punch / Rock Slide / Superpower / Flare Blitz
Named after Queen Barbara of Portugal, who I'd only heard of because two of my piano pieces for the diploma that I've now failed twice are by Domenico Scarlatti, and he taught her keyboard. Like I said, lists of well-known classical composers are sausage-fests. Anyway, I threw this thing onto my team because I didn't have many ideas for the sixth slot and I knew it would make everything much easier. Darmanitan is freaking great in-game. Everyone says that. I was surprised that Lonely vs. Adamant seemed to make a difference on something with Darmanitan's bad defenses, but this one seems to be KOed by far more things than the Adamant Darmanitan I had when I played through Japanese!Black. Still, its Attack is as ridiculous as ever.
Gershwin (male Archeops, Rash) - Acrobatics / Crunch / Rock Slide / Fly
Man, why not Archaeos? That was such a cool name! I did soft reset for him, but stopped when I got Rash under the mistaken impression that Archeops' special movepool was wider than it actually is. That didn't hurt him much, though - he doesn't need anything apart from Acrobatics to tear apart the rest of the storyline, as long as you revive the fossil before leaving Nimbasa (and really, Nacrene isn't that far by bike). The prospect of an Adamant or Jolly Archeops in-game is downright frightening. Also, it's funny when you use a contact move on Cofagrigus or something else uses Entrainment on you. It's a shame that wild battles don't last long enough for the full hilarity to ensue.
Debussy (male Galvantula, Mild) - Thunder / Hidden Power (Rock) / Signal Beam / Charge Beam
Have I mentioned that Joltik is by far my favourite BW Pokémon? Just look at it! It's a fuzzball! A tiny, tiny fuzzball! ♥ Oh, and it's actually good, which is neat. Perfect accuracy Charge Beam is a lot of fun to play with, despite only having 50% chance of a boost. I'm not sure what Hidden Power is there for, but it has better coverage than freaking Volt Switch.
The only other team member I've had this run was the fire monkey, who I used to beat Cilan's monkey and promptly boxed. Eh, it's Modest and possibly has a 31 SpA IV, so at least I can use it to breed something cooler.
After this post, back to Pokémon! There's no homework urgently due in tomorrow, it's all good! I'm trying to get a near-complete Unova Dex (omitting Zekrom, Landorus and event mons) and fill my PC before finishing the storyline. I still don't have wifi, so it'll take a while. And I'll beat Black first so I can trade over some Dittos for breeding, obviously; wouldn't want to be unrealistic or waste box spaces, right?
