So. Stayed up until 3 in the morning watching Frontier episodes and pretending to be asleep. And these were the dub episodes, because the two subs I watched told me that the dub was at least better than 02's and that was good enough. I feel sad. But at least I can comment more objectively now, right?

The episodes I watched... Well, the episodes where Takuya, Zoe and JP get their Human Spirits, the episode with the magical evolving Tsunomon, about five minutes of episode 17 until I heard the line I wanted to hear and got bored, and everything from Cherubimon's death to the end. It took a long time, even skipping all the Takouji long and repetitive fight scenes.

...Even after watching all that, Tamers is still much better, obviously.

I can't get used to the evolution sequences. It doesn't help that in the Tamers movies Frontier music was used for those evolution/card sequences, and now whenever one of the power rangers lifts their Digivice above their head I'm expecting a "Digi-Modify!" Or possibly a "Digi-Armour Energise!"... but not just "Execute", which is lame.

I guess the dub is better than 02's and probably Adventure's too, but I wouldn't say it's better than Tamers. At least by the first biomerge sequence the dub had stopped throwing inane puns around everywhere. In Frontier? Well, in episode 5 original, Junpei tells Takuya not to go in because it might not be safe (or something similarly sensible). In the dub? He tells Tacky to go order him something out of the cafeteria, and it doesn't even fit his expression. Whiskey tango foxtrot?

What is it with dub JP and "Tacky", anyway? "Z" you could sort of equate to "Izumi-chaa~an", it's derived from a normal name in English and it's kind of cute. But I'm pretty sure Junpei never went around calling Mr. Fire Spirit "Takuya-chan".

OMG! Screw Taikato, Junkuya bez OTP!

I still think I like him the best, despite all of them being power rangers. I take back what I said before about his voice, he does start sounding like Kenta when he's acting hysterical. Library? Koichi is cute and in the ending he's very sweet, but he angsts just a bit too much for his own good. Same goes for Koji. And Takuya's dub voice has so far failed to grow on me. Can he decide between sounding like Matt, sounding like Henry and sounding like... well, himself?

Lucemon is evil!Izzy! >D He's not a bad villain, and if he'd expanded a bit on his idea of utopia he would have been as creepy as the D-Reaper, but it's difficult to take him seriously when you're cracking up every time he says anything. See why you should never trust computer nerds?

Bokomon, Neemon and Patamon are all incredibly annoying. They get some nice lines occasionally ("It's a train track. There are trains on it. It's like, the whole smoke-fire thing?"), but their voices are painful. I hope Savers Agumon sounds better.

Oh yeah, if being able to keep up several totally different annoying voices is a sign of skill, Henry must have had the most talented voice actor in Digimon. I mean, mein Kinder! And then movie 7 Takuya! Rargh.

And, that line in episode 17? You can't hear Guilmon's voice at all. No wonder the little American kiddies got confused.

I kind of liked the little band of Angemon kids, even if they were assholes. Let's see, you've got a guy who sounds exactly like Kazu, a guy who sounds even more exactly like Davis, and a guy who doesn't sound exactly like Tai but is close enough for you to tell. What is this? Goggle boy reunion? I wish they had stuck around a bit longer, though. No wonder people like writing about them.

So, my main problem with Frontier... The overall plot is more coherent than Tamers, certainly more than Adventure and 02, but the episodes themselves just fall down somewhere as far as pacing goes. Whoever described the latter part of Frontier as "The Takuya and Kouji Show" was being pretty observant. So far I think only the fifth episode and the Tsunomon episode actually managed to hold together.

The ending wasn't awful, but again, pacing. Probably the original Japanese version was more touching. The only bit I really liked was Koichi's "I didn't think I'd see you", but then all the Digivices go glittery and the mood is gone. It suffered from the pacing, as well.

...But that's just me, who's biased towards Tamers.

I'm gonna go watch the dub of the Rapidmon/Pajiramon episode again now. Whoosh.
