CHAPTER 1: To the South

"Hey, Steve." Grant approached Steve as the tech specialist was double checking equipment.  They had just gotten a case from Kris about a haunted ranch in the Deep South. They mentioned the belief that demons were afoot and they were very scared. Whatever it was spooked the horses, bothered them in their sleep and had a tendency to show up as an old woman in a shawl following them about. Grant had taken the case on spot because the couple had small children and a third on the way. Plus, there was little chance of having a ‘Fear Cage’ situation since they had all the experiences in a room with no running electricity.

Steve looked up, smiling. He’d been no different to Grant and Jason on the outside, but something with his demeanor toward Tango had changed. There was more physical, thought fleeting, contact, and they tended to gravitate toward each other whenever possible. Grant smiled to see his team so happy.

"The location's in Dallas, Texas. We're leaving in about a week on plane, but I don't know how long it's gonna take you and Tango to drive the van all the way down there."

"Just the one van?" Steve stretched his arms to the sky. "Or are we taking both?"

"Just the one; it's a small location, so we won't need that many cameras." Grant sat down on the side of the table. "It's going to be a hell of a drive, though. Maybe three days, we guess, but we really don't know."

"You said you're leaving in seven days?" Steve considered the information for a moment. "Let’s see if we can get out tomorrow. Better to be early than have something happen and end up getting there late."

"My sentiments exactly. You can get Tango and see when you'll be ready. Let me know if you’re leaving tomorrow before you go."

Steve nodded, heading out the door to locate Tango.

Tango watched the coin in his hand disappear and reappear in his palm languidly. It had been a month since he'd gotten released from the hospital. He made the coin vanish. Gone, just like the month. Time went so fast when you're happy.

But he was happy before, too. What was different now? The only thing that had changed was the fact that he was dating Steve - semi-secretly - when they were off duty. With the occasional on duty kiss, since being off duty for spans of time was rather rare. He sighed, pulling the coin from his shoe. He'd be happier if the time didn't fly as fast as it did.

"Tango!" Steve walked out to find Tango lounging on the hood of the van. "You and I have to drive the cars down to Dallas, and I was thinking we start a few days early, just in case."

"Both vans?" Tango had already resigned himself to a car ride alone before the words even left his mouth. He paused, however, when he saw Steve’s bright smile staring back at him. “Or just the one big one?”

"Just the one." Steve grinned even wider. Tango turned to look at Steve, face breaking into a smile. "And if we can make good time, we might have a few days alone."

Before Steve could say anything else, Tango jumped up, gave him a quick kiss, and before Steve could kiss back, Tango was already opening the van to start packing. "Then let’s get on the road!"

"Drive safe. We'll see you in a week." Grant was wishing them goodbye. Tango waved from the door of the passenger seat, stuffing his overnight duffle between the back wall and his seat. Steve climbed into the driver seat, making sure his bag was behind his chair.

"Bye guys!" He called, leaning out the window. Tango hopped into the car and closed the door, leaning back into the seat. Soon, they were on the road and away from the TAPS office. Tango quietly reached over and put his hand on Steve's.

"Seven days to travel a three day drive." Tango said, putting his feet up. "What're we gonna do for the other four days?"

"I can think of a few things." Steve grinned. "We could take our time; make a few hotel stops…."  He winked. Tango laughed.

"Are we that far already?" He asked, serious, putting his arms behind his head. "It's only been two months."

"And we've been friends for years, which makes it just seem longer." Steve drummed his fingers on the wheel. "Remember that time we found that boat costume?"

"Steer my ship?" Tango asked, bursting into laughter.

"You said 'no, no, not in here." Steve playfully poked Tango in the arm.

"I said 'get outta here'." Tango corrected, flushed. Steve chuckled, switching on the radio. They turned onto the highway, leading them away from Rhode Island and away from the TAPS team and into their own natural world.

They didn't stop until they reached Dallas. Well, they made pit stops for food, and they traded off driving and sleeping, but even with those they only wasted an hour or two not on the road. Because of this, they made Dallas in nearly thirty-six hours, giving them nearly six days before the rest of TAPS would arrive.

"This is unexpected." Tango said, as they passed the 'Welcome to Dallas' sign. "I thought it would be a three day drive."

"It would have been if we made any stops." Steve yawned softly, having spent the night driving down the lonely highways. "The spend-nights-at-hotels stops sort of thing. Speaking of, we need to find a hotel close to the location. And something to do for the next six days."

Tango stared out the window at the rising sun, watching the golden light hit off the trees. "There should be a Holiday Inn somewhere close by." He said. A hawk soared over the van. "They're good about TAPS members sort of dropping in."

"Well," Steve pulled off onto an exit into the main city, "we'll just have to find it. Then, I vote we take hot showers, get some food and sleep the rest of the day." He smiled. Tango nodded, laughing. The road had been hard on them. They both had dark circles under their eyes and Steve looked ready to pass out, any time.

Just as they were contemplating a nice hot shower, they managed to pass the thing they were looking for - a Holiday Inn. Steve pulled in without a moment's notice and parked their van near the back, where it would be less likely to be noticed, with all the equipment in it.

"Welcome to Holiday Inn, how may I help you?" The lady at the desk was bright and perky, making Tango frown. It was too early to be so perky. Steve managed a half-smile in his sleep deprived state.

"We need a room for six nights. We'll probably want more than six nights, but we don't know how long we're staying once our friends get here." He said. The lady nodded, sort of confused.

"Two bed suite?" She asked. Steve looked at Tango, who looked back at him. Though their faces were blank, they managed to exchange a conversation between their eyes.

"Single bed, if you don't mind." Steve smiled as pleasantly as he could. "We, uh, want to budget the cash, just in case." He added, noticing the strange look the woman was giving her. Steve quickly handed her the TAPS card. It got them discounts; they used the Inn so much. The lady nodded, suddenly understanding. If they were going to stay six days, then possible two or three more with the team, they needed to budget as much as they could.

"TAPS investigating something really big?" She asked, handing the card back. Steve shook his head as Tango handed her the required cash.

"Nah, we're just here earlier than we thought we would be. It was supposed to be a three day trip. We were only on the road for thirty-six hours, and we set aside three days just in case we had car problems."

"Once, when we had a huge drive, they were late because they got a flat tire." Tango added, taking the change. The lady smiled, laughing.

"Room 208." She handed Steve the key. "Complimentary breakfast is served at seven, room service is included, as well as turn-down service. The cleaning ladies come by around noon-ish. We have brochures in the bedside tables that include all the Dallas sites of interest if you wish to check anything out during your stay. Have fun!" She wished them off. After a second, she added "and Happy Hunting!"

~*~

"This bed feels so good." Steve murmured, relaxing on the bed as Tango got out of the shower. Dave, in hat and towel, wandered out of the bathroom, smiling.

"Take your shower so we can go get breakfast. Then you can sleep." He said. Steve looked up and smiled sleepily.

"Maybe I'll lay here for another minute. I kinda like this view." He grinned, the sleep slurring his speech. Tango shook his head, smiling. After a moment, Steve heaved himself off the bed and wandered to the bathroom, pausing to give Tango a quick kiss. "I won't be long."

Tango smiled, chuckling to himself as he dressed. He put on a TAPS t-shirt and some comfortable pants, preparing to sleep in them when they returned from breakfast. He was too tired to change cloths before jumping into bed. Steve emerged a few minutes later, changing quickly with the same idea in mind.

"Let's go get that free breakfast." Tango said, heading for the door. Steve followed, a little like a tired puppy.

"I really hope they have coffee."
