District 9 definitely made an impression

We finally watched District 9 this weekend. Wow! What an amazing movie. This is Sci Fi as allegory and social/political commentary that, in my opinion, is on a par with Heinlein and Bradbury. And it's just plain good story telling as well.

I think that the juxtaposition of "documentary" footage with "live action" was a particularly elegant way to add multiple dimensions to the characters and allow for plot development without a lengthy exposition. Yes, the movie takes a pretty dim view of humanity but I think it's an excellent cautionary tale about how easy it can be for people and for governments to justify their own self interest at the expense of those defined as "other".

I will be thinking about this one for a long time.

On a completely different topic, I finally caved and opened a FaceBook account this weekend. However, this post illustrates the main reason I will never give up LJ. This short (in order to make sure I avoided all spoilers) movie review did not fit and could not be posted. 420 character limits? What kind of BS is that? Suffice to say, Facebook will be a tool for taking with folks not on LJ and that is it.

movies, lj
