The random stranger on the train

Dec 30, 2004 13:53

Yesterday I was on the train home when an entire row of passengers exited at the interchange, so I sat myself down on an empty seat.

And then this gold-cladded Ah Seng (think skinny guy in white ribbed tee and faded blue jeans with flat greased hair) saddled next to me and smiled at me.

I quickly put on my earphones to ward him off.

But he didn't get my hint, because he leaned towards me and whispered something- I couldn't make it out as I was listening to my music.

Out of courtesy, I took off my earphones and he repeated himself.

"Hi, can we be friends?"

I gave a weak smile and shoke my head, saying, "No, it's okay."

He persisted. I insisted.

Thank God somebody called me, so I heaved a sigh of relief inside me and picked up my mobile. That guy kept peering over at me but I had to pretend I wasn't bothered.

When I got off, he turned towards me again and then asked if I could take down his number.

"You want me to take YOUR number?" I asked, bewildered.

"Yah, since I know you won't give me yours."

I should have just upped and head for another cabin, but for some stupid reason, I found myself entering his number in my phone. To make matters worse, I had to ask him for his name. (To protect his identity, I shall not mention it.)

As if I couldn't get any stupider, he then very casually asked me back for my name and number, and I think I was too shocked to refuse him.

"Are you free tomorrow night? I would like to ask you out."
"No, I'm going for a movie with my friends."
"A group of them?"
"Er, yah."
"The Stephen Chow show?"
"No, an English show."
"Which one?"
"Meet the Fockers."
"How about Friday? Can we meet up on Friday?"
"No, I am going Malaysia."
"Oh... you coming back on Sunday?"
"Er, yah."

And thank God somebody else called me again, and this time I was more reluctant to hang up.

I almost thought he was going to follow me home! But he got off at Commonwealth, with me still on the phone. He smiled and waved goodbye, indicating with his left hand that he would call me. I returned with a stupid smile.

What is wrong with all these men? I was pretty unglam after a whole day out. He must be really lonely this new year.

I swear I didn't pray for a groupie of my own...
