My 15 year old, tom boy sister is currently trying on her prom dress (she's leaving highschool year). The first dress she's had on her back since her First Holy Communion when she was 8.
I say 'prom', but I'm not entirely comfortable with the term. When we left highschool we had a 'leavers' do' at a crappy Irish center which tbh was a whole lot of fun. In the intervening years the same highschool I went to seems to have developed a tradition of having a prom at a fancy venue, where a couple of drinks cost more than the average high school leaver has to spend in a month, with idiotic 16 year olds spending all their parent's money on limos. Limos which take them from their homes to the school where they have to get on the bus with everyone else. The whole thing smacks way to much of stupidity for me.
I'm amazed at the way the whole thing has gotten to my sister though.
We had to go dress shopping (she NEVER wears dresses or skirts. It's hellish to try to talk her into smart trousers for a formal event)
Then we had to go shoe shopping (for 6 years she has worn only trainers and flip flops and thrown tantrums whenever asked to wear shoes) We had to go shoe shopping for 4 hours.
Next came yet another shopping trip for a bag and some jewellry. I'm not sure why three seperate trips where necessary. I'd have wanted to get everything at one. And she refused to go without me as she's so unused to 'girlie shopping' as she puts it.
Last night she insisted I do her makeup (as I will for the prom tomorrow) to make sure she likes it. Then suggested I pluck her eyebrows, which she's never had done before. With all the flinching and moping and 'Oh God! Isn't it over yet?' it took me over an hour. The big pussy. And she loves to make out she's so tough!
Tonight Mum was supposed to dye her hair, but somehow I ended up having to do this.
Taking into account that much of this took up most of my free time after work, that's 5 days devoted to prep for a party I'm not even going to!
She better fucking enjoy herself!
