Let's do some math!

Kristen makes $9 an hour.
Gas is currently $3.41 per gallon.
Kristen's gas tank is approximately 15 gallons.

To fill Kristen's gas tank it costs. . .
15 x $3.41 = $51.15

Now! Let's take this a step further, shall we?

Kristen's gas tank gets approximately 350 miles total.
350 miles / 15 gallons = approximately 23 miles per gallon.

From my house to work it is 35 miles (one way). So! Round trip it's 70 miles to and from work in one day.
70 miles / 23 mpg = approximately 3 gallons of gas to and from work

Now. Once we take that into consideration plus going to work five days a week, there goes Kristen's 15 gallons of gas. . .not to mention her $51.15.

So, now that we've come to that conclusion. . .once again, let's take this one step further.

Once we go "full time" at work, I'll be working a minimum of 50 hours a week.
50 hours x $9/hour = $450 (not including taxes).

Once we take taxes into consideration, Kristen's check dwindles down to about. . .oh, $400 (just so the number is even, but it's probably even less).

Now. . .Let's go back to that magic number of how much money it takes to fill Kristen's tank...
$51.15 / $9/hour = 5.683 which we'll round to 6.

In order to fill Kristen's gas tank, not including taxes, she needs to work about 6 hours which is one single shift.

Therefore! Approximately one work day of Kristen's paycheck is going to gas alone, and that's taking into consideration that she is only filling her tank one time a week!

Now. . .I swear. There is a point to all this number crunching. . .

Let's say, and this is quite possible, that gas gets up to as much as $4 per gallon.

Quickly. . .
$4 per gallon x 15 gallons = $60 to fill Kristen's tank.
$60 / $9/hours = approximately 7 hours of work to fill the tank.

Basically, what I'm getting down to is, with the price of gas rising every day, and only getting worse as the days pass, it's becoming WAY too expensive to be driving 70 miles to and from work every day. Not only that, with the crappy pay I make on top of having to pay bills, buy food, and save money for various expenses, it's getting really bad.

Something needs to be done, and quick. =\
