Try Googling on monopod + Pliny, Historia naturalis.

John Block Friedman's book on the monstruous races in antiquity and
the Middle Ages is rich on information about Monopods and other
strange creatures.

By the way, they make a lovely appearance as Dufflepuds in one of C.
S. Lewis's Narnia books (The Magician's Nephew? I'm working from
memory).
