Football, guests and the swingset

Our friend Mathew has moved back to birmingham, and while he shops for the right apartment for he and his fiance (who is still in SanDiego) he is staying with us!! I'm stoked because he is interested in joining me for nightly jogs and playing basketball at the gym. There has also been some talk of getting an ultimate frisbee game together at nearby Veterans Park. I always enjoy having Mathew around, because the conversation seldom lags and his interests vary from academia to futurism to college football to poker to teaching to food... when he's around we spend far more time just flapping our gums and laughing and far less time zoned out in front of the boob tube.

Chelsea and I drove up to Nashville friday night and grabbed a hotel room so we get get to the Alabama v Vanderbilt game a little early for kickoff. The Alabama faithful showed up in force, generating a vibe that felt more like a home game than a road game. (Honestly- I thought the crowd was 70% Bama, 30% Vandy) Our team played well, and Chelsea noted it was the first game she'd been to in person in many moons that we won. She was starting to feel like a bad luck charm for the Tide (football only- she's got a great track record for hoops.) We made excellent time on the way home, getting back to Bham with sufficient room in the schedule to stop for chinese food and still make the 8 o'clock kickoff of LSU/VT and Auburn/USF at Brad and Angie's place. The rolltide posse make college football season all the tastier! We retired for the evening totally wiped out.

Sunday we went to the aforementioned Veterans park with my sister and our nephew. Chels and I eat up opportunities to be "first" with Cole on anything, and this one was really special. Cole's first experience on a playground! His 1st swingset and slide... I love that kid so much! And watching Chelsea with him has me convinced that she is going to be a fantastic mother herself.

Later Sunday night we went to the gym with Mathew and took in a little Thai Emerald. Best sushi in bham, imo.

Today I went to the endocrinologist. My hemoglobin A1C has gone from 10.3 at my worst, to 8, 7.8 and now 7.3. This is a new record for me, and shows continued commitment to changes in diet and exercise do make a difference over time. I have now set a goal for myself that I once thought unattainable: to get my A1C into the 6's.

In the lobby, while waiting for my appointment, I overheard two women discussing a book. They both fit the stereotype you picture for overweight ignorant trailer trash- unkempt, dirty and obese to the point of appearing disgusting. These are women who gave THEMSELVES type 2 diabetes by eating nothing but ding dongs and ho ho's and washing it down with a case of Coca Cola a day, I'm sure. The one woman was excited that she got the book, "For only $18.99 at Walmart," and told her buddy, "I haven't read any of it yet, but I've sure nuff' looked at all them pictures." The other woman swooned, proclaiming, "He shore is a fiiiiiine specimen. I believe he's the most attractive man alive."

The book was You can run but you can't hide by Dog, the bounty hunter. They carried on a conversation about what kind of makeup Dog's wife wears on the show, his inspirational demeanor on the show, and most importantly, his hair.

Sigh.

7.3!!!!!!!! 7.3!!!!!!!!!!!!!
