Hypothesis

Humans will always need something to believe in - something to give them hope, or a reason to keep going. However, at the end of the day, it's only a selfish belief... it couldn't possibly be real. Even so, we still continue to have faith, because it is not what we do, but who we are.

Mathiu: *wanders up the stairs towards the library, a notebook under his arm as he makes his way up the stairs*

Viki: *sitting by herself in the library, quietly reading an old history book*

Mathiu: ...Evening...*takes a seat at an empty table, but feels the need to exchange pleasantries*

Viki: *looks up at him, but feeling a little cautious* Mathiu Silverberg.. I must say this is quite a surprise. What can I do for you?

Mathiu: Miss Viki...I... *sets his notebook on the table* I wish to ask you to reconsider.

Viki: *suspiciously glances at the notebook, and then back at Mathiu* Is that so? *puts her history book aside*

Mathiu: *firmly* Yes. I understand your concerns but consider this: I know there will be some difficult times ahead and it seems that fate has gathered those of us with experience in war.

Viki: Do you really know that there is going to be difficult times ahead, or is that pure speculation? I am also certain that not everyone here was involved in a war.

Mathiu: *raises a brow* I am certain, and name one person who wasn't?

Viki: The one they call Peck.

Mathiu: *waves a hand dismissively* He was a pirate, according to the literature. He saw his share of battles.

Viki: Little children witness battles. That does not make them soldiers. What about Miss Lalacle? Do you think she can serve a purpose in war?

Mathiu: Anyone can serve a purpose. Tending to the wounded, procuring goods, boosting the moral of warriors...

Viki: Then what is MY purpose? Do you really believe that I will allow time to steer in a different direction? Watch it destruct itself due to your selfish needs?

Mathiu: While some of my motives are selfish--and I admit that--they are also altruisitic. Are there any other doctors in this castle? No.
Mathiu: *tents his fingers* And, as to your purpose, it is certainly not to disrupt whatever it is that dharma is doing by bringing us here.

Viki: You are wrong. If anything, this is absolute chaos.

Mathiu: *glares at her* Is it? How could it be chaos if we are being drawn to fight something?

Viki: "Fight" something..? *stands up, beginning to lose her patience* Do you even hear what you are saying? What exactly are we supposed to "fight"? The only thing you are fighting now is your fate.

Mathiu: *sighs, knowing when to admit defeat, but only for the moment and only such that the other will let down her guard* Fair enough. You know me too well. I hate war. Do with me what you will, but answer this--why me? There are plenty of others at this castle who need to return. Why select me to be the first?

Viki: *stern look* I don't recall saying that you were first. Such a task cannot be done one by one, as it would take time - a luxury that we might not have. No, this has to be done in groups, preferrably in one. However... *decides that the details aren't important* Well then, I do believe our conversation is over.

Mathiu: *shakes his head* Very well.

Viki: Don't forget your notebook. *looks at it*

Mathiu: *flatly* It never leaves my sight.

Viki: ... Hn. *politely smiles and sits down to read her book again*
