I sure haven't updated in a while, so what better way to fill in the world on the life and times of Jimbo than by telling it about My Saturday Night.
Last night Leon, Abbey and I went to Festival Hall to allow the wonderfully eclectic Mars Volta to rock our world. And rock it they did! The air hung heavy as the crowd's anticipation built, an anticipation which sought release everywhere. Not even a mad (and apparently, unprompted) cheer and rush to the front of the stage a full 40 minutes before the band showed any signs of coming on could calm them as they eyed each other off nervously, each passively vieing for his or her spot to see the stage.
Finally, the Hall fell dark. A single horn blast, and the theme from "A Few Dollars" began to move through the crowd, pulling at chests and minds as it hit a crescendo. As the horns failed and died, the band stepped onto stage, and immediately the crowd cried and surged forward again to meet them.
A full two and a half hours later the band had only stopped playing twice to allow Cedric Bixler-Zavala to talk to the audience, once to thank them, and another to urge them to dance. Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez was actually quite subdued compared to his lyrical counterpart, instead letting his pretty mental guitar playing speak for him. All in all, they played an unprecedented 11 songs, considerably more than my bet of 6.
(Part 1 and 2 of Cicatriz ESP - not recorded from last night - which went understandably off)
Highlights included the first single from their latest album Amputechture, Viscera Eyes (which i'd previously never thought much of, so was pleasantly surprised), and my personal favourite Day of the Baphomets, which they closed with.
Leaving, a bloke stopped us.
him - "Mate, are you a footballer?!"
me -"Haha, no mate."
him - "Yeah you are! Houlihan! How you doing mate?!"
me -"Good thanks.."
He had me confused with Carlton half-back Ryan Houlihan, which I suppose is fair enough because they were playing around the corner that night?
Leon and I bought Mocha Big-Ms and donuts from a 7-11 and bumped into Lawton's friend Justin. All in all, it was a good night.
