Series: I need you safe (i have been informed that it should be called a title, which i know. But i like series better, so neha *sticks tongue out*)
Part: One - Prologue
Word Count: 1807
Characters: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones.
Pairings: Jack/Ianto, very hinted at Gwen/Rhys
Rating: PG-13 (might go up in later chapters)
Genre: Angst! And much AU after this chapter.
Warning: Spoilers for Exit Wounds and the whole of the second series.
Disclaimer: Alas the Torchwood character's are not mine, they belong to other more fabulous people. Which makes me sad.

Un-beta'ed, sorry. Any and all mistakes are my own, and i apologize for them.

Authors Ramble: Ok so this is just something i've been messing with while i'm waiting on my other fic Taken, the latest chapter is in the beta's grasp right now. I will get it posted asap. Anywho, this deals with mostly Jack and Martha (not in any shippy way) but trust me when i say it IS a Jack/Ianto fic. I'm just a sucker for tearing the boys apart at first, oh i know i'm evil. But i'm lovable, so it evens out ^_^

Summary: Jack takes desperate measures to assure his remaining staff is safe, which leaves him with a new team who are experiencing a VERY different side of Jack. Now it's up to one of his closest friends to try and straighten things out.

Jack was sitting in his office, normally he would be avoiding his paper work like the plague. But it seemed that on this particular night the boisterous time agent was completely enamored with his paper work.
It was far too late for anyone to still be in the Hub other than him, which made it easier for him to concentrate on the task before hand. Which helped since the Hub was a rather distracting place as of late. There was the strong smell of bleach and cleaning fluid permeating the the whole place and ever so often a breeze would run through from the A.C, causing the large plastic sheets that were haphazardly hung up over the med bay's entrance to move, sending a crinkling noise echoing throughout the large headquarters. The sound and smell were constant reminders of what exactly was trying to be cleaned up off the floor and stairs of the bay, but blood was a difficult thing to clean. And the fact that it was Tosh's blood made the task all the more horrifying.

It had only been a few short weeks since Jack had lost half of his team, Owen dying alone across town, and Toshiko dying in his arms in a room only a few feet from where he sat at that very moment. Those two deaths set things in motion almost right away in Jack's mind, it only took him hours to decide that he wasn't about to let the rest of his team face the same end.

Now Jack had been in Torchwood for a long time, incredibly long in fact. And had been in charge for a solid eight years, and in his many many years he had seen far too many staff members die. He had mourned each and every one of them, missed each and every one of them. And yet never before had he ever considered doing what he was doing.

When the phone rang suddenly, Jack looked up from the personnel file he had been hunched over working on.

"Harkness." He answered briskly when he picked up the phone, listening as the person on the other end speak. "Yes, that's right. Gwen Williams. She was on sabbatical." He leaned back in his chair. "Well says me." He was tired and it was far too late to be arguing with the police chief, and yet there he was doing just that. "Listen!" He spoke firmly. "Gwen Williams was just on sabbatical and will be rejoining the force on Monday, upon the authorization of Torchwood, Harkness, Jack, 4-7-4-3-1-7. Check with your superiors, it's all arranged. Now goodnight." Jack hung up a bit more firmly then intended as he sighed in a frustrated manner.

"Working late?" A voice from the doorway made the older man jump slightly.

"Jesus Ianto! Bell, neck, look into it." He said, glaring at the Welshman who was leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed over his chest.

"Sorry, normally you hear me." Ianto shrugged.

"Yeah well i'm a little distracted tonight is all."

Ianto hummed in agreement as he casually made his way into the office. "Yes, it must be terribly distracting have me here. What with you retconing us and all."

Jack's head snapped up, looking at Ianto in surprise. Jack idly noted how more blatant the other man's youth was when he wasn't wearing a suit, instead he was wearing jeans and a mat black t-shit with a jean jacket over it. He was practically a child compared to Jack's thousands of years of life. "What did you say?"

"You heard me." Ianto said, standing before Jack's desk with his arms still crossed, looking at the captain in an unimpressed manner.

"You always have been too smart for your own good." Jack said with a little chuckle.

"No, just well trained. I've administered retcon to hundreds of people, i've doctored thousands of personnel files. I know how much work it is, and i know what that work looks like. You've been planing this for weeks."

Jack would have been impressed, but he wasn't. Just for the simple fact that he always knew how clever Ianto was, so him working out what Jack was doing wasn't exactly a surprise.

"Besides Gwen and myself, who else?" Ianto asked, sitting down in the chair that sat in front of the desk.

"Rhys, obviously. As well as Andy Davidson. They're both civilians, i wasn't about to chance them." Jack said simply, his tone conversational. Like he hadn't just been caught erasing the memories of his closets friends.

"And what about Gwen? She's not exactly a civilian."

"No, but i wasn't about to lose her too. So i did what i had too."

"Had too?" Ianto echoed. "Had too? You didn't have to do any of this!" He said loudly, his anger starting to get the best of him. "And what about me, hmmm? How far were you planing on sending me back? To before you? Before Torchwood Three? Or hell were you going to go for the package deal and just going to wipe all traces of Torchwood from my mind? You, this place, Lisa, the battle?"

Jack just sat quietly as Ianto fumed at him, leaning forward in his chair.

"Tell me!" The younger man snapped, hitting the desk with the palm of his hand. Ianto hadn't meant to get so mad, but Jack's stoic attitude was getting to him. "Jack tell me." He said, calmer this time.

"What do you want me to say?" Jack asked, tenting his hands on the desk in front of him.

Ianto stared at him for a moment, unsure as of what to say to that. "Tell me i'm wrong." He said finally, in an almost pleading way.

"No."

"No?"

"No, you're not wrong." Jack told him. "I was going to retcon you, just like i did Gwen and the two men."

"Why? Why me?" Ianto asked desperately. "I'm trying to understand Jack, i really am. But i..."

"I got too close." Jack cut in.

"Too close?"

"Yes. To you, to Gwen. To the whole team. When Tosh and Owen died i realized, you lot weren't just my staff. You're friends, my family. I won't lose anymore of you."

Ianto was quiet for a moment, taking in Jack's words. "So basically, you're scared." Ianto said in an accusing tone, narrowing his eyes at the other man. "You're scared, and besides that, what you're doing is incredibly selfish. Honestly Jack, how could you? You've no right." Ianto said, sounding disappointed in the other man.

"I had every right." Jack insisted, looking every bit the petulant child.

"No, you didn't."

"Dammit Ianto!" Jack snapped, cutting the Welshman off. "I can't lose you!" His voice held a mournful tone to it.

"But don't you see?" Ianto begun softly. "You are, i won't remember you."

Jack smiled a sad smile, getting up from where he sat and moving to lean against the desk in front of Ianto. "You'll be alive, that's enough."

"I'm alive now!" The younger man pleaded, standing up. "Jack, i know you're upset about Tosh and Owen but you can't run away from it. Not like this." He placed his hands on Jack's shoulders, his blue eyes bright and honest.
Jack stared off to the side, seemingly unable to look at the man in front of him. "Jack?" Ianto questioned.

In a sudden flurry of movement, Jack pulled Ianto into a searing kiss. It was desperate and needy, sloppy even. All tongues and teeth, slick mouths sliding against one another. Ianto thought for a moment about pulling away, but didn't. When it came to Jack, he never could.
They stayed in their embrace for only moments, but those moments could have lasted years for all they knew. They were completely wrapped up in each other, clinging to one another. When they finally broke apart Ianto rested his forehead against Jack's, chest heaving.

"What was that for?" Ianto said with a smirk, knowing full and well that he had once again fallen for one of Jack's typical distraction techniques.

"Nothing, just..." Jack trailed off, shrugging slighting.

"Jack, what? Tell me." Ianto pressed the subject, knowing that the other man obviously wanted to say something.

"Just, wanted a goodbye kiss." Jack said softly, his voice barely a whisper.

"What?" Ianto felt a cold shiver run down his spine.

"I'm sorry." Jack said, looking at Ianto with sad eyes.

"Jack?" Ianto's voice held a slight edge of panic to it, his eyes going wide with shock as he felt his head begun to spin.

"I'm sorry." Jack repeated, reaching for a tissue off his desk and wiping his lips with it.

Ianto cursed inwardly, why hadn't he noticed the slight sheen on the other man's lips? He knew that Jack didn't wear lip balm normally, right there should have been a warning sign. But being that his mind was so frazzled when he'd showed up, it wasn't a wonder that he had overlooked it.

"You knew i was coming." Ianto said in an accusatory manner.

"CCTV." Jack told him simply.

Ianto stumbled a bit, tripping slightly against the chair he had been sitting in earlier. Jack reached out to steady him, but Ianto batted his hand away. "Piss off!" He said gruffy, quickly making his way out of Jack's office and into the main level of the Hub. Walking very much like he had just had too much to drink.

"You bastard." He breathed angrily, stumbling over the small coffee table that sat in front of the couch. He felt Jack grab a hold of his upper body, righting him once again. "What did you do?" Ianto asked, his voice sounding heavy on his tongue.

"Just a sedative, fast acting." Jack told him, maneuvering the younger man onto the sofa.

"Why?" Ianto asked from where he was slumped on the couch, fighting tooth and nail to keep his eyes open. Jack who was kneeling on the floor next to Ianto's feet, silently took a few small white pills out of his shirt pocket and placed them on the table by them.

"Please!" Ianto all but begged. "Please Jack, don't retcon me."

"I have too."

"No you don't." Ianto argued, he was quickly losing the battle against the strong sedative. "Jack, i need you.... I love you." His voice no more than a mumble now.

"I know." Jack said, tears welling up in his eyes as he took hold of the other man's hand, pressing his cheek against it. "I love you too." He spoke against Ianto's hand, his breath ghosting over his knuckles.

"Then why?" Ianto managed to slur out, sounding horribly heartbroken.

"Because..." Jack began as he watched his lover slip into a heavily drug induced sleep. "I need you safe." He whispered.
