I admit I was excited. Willie Wonka, a movie I knew and loved as a child, was going to be revisited by two of my most favorite creative personas: Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. The trailer was the first notice that the movie would be different. The approach was distinct, so I figured the movie would be different, possibly in a good way. And I realized, a little, that I had reservations about how good a deviation would be. So I put my desire to actually watch the movie on hiatus and went my merry way.
I watched this revisitation four days ago and in and of itself, I have to admit that its not badly done. They have all the same main characters, each is slightly different, but the idea is fundamentally the same. And I thought I was okay with it.
But I was visiting random sites today and it hit me: I miss the old Wonka. I miss Gene Wilder having that sparkle in his eye that showed you he had magic.
I expect that those who will have seen the current movie will not see the same thing I do in the original, and I imagine a part of it reflects who I was when I watched the original, but part of it has got to do with how the new version reflects the culture it was created in.
And I wonder if Roald Dahl would approve of the new movie. I have no idea, but I am genuinely curious.
