What a Fiori

I went to a chum’s 40th birthday party last Friday evening at a pub in Coventry called the Hare and Hounds. There was a band playing, of relatively younger standing - they surely can’t have been much older than 20! who went under the name of “Fiori” -which, I’m told, is Italian for flowers. Despite their tender years, the band had an astonishing early 70s penchant. All the band were wearing 70s gear, and the joint lead singer/guitarists looked for all the world like Bowie and Ronson of the Ziggy Stardust era. They kicked off with Iggy Pop’s “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and never looked back, trawling through a selection of goodies which, if I were pushed, I could only describe as “avant -garde metal” - though no doubt the purists would argue with that particular monicker. However, the four lads proved themselves worthy musicians, the assembled discriminating crowd loving their every single note, grimace and head-shake to the last. They ploughed on through bass-pedal and guitar string breaks as though nothing had happened, and even if the music proved heavy going at times, the gymnastics and facial contortions of the front pair proved entertaining enough in themselves.

A very fine band. I shall look out for them and check out their next sortie. Blindy recommends them.
