Toph tried to sleep on Appa's back, but sleep failed to come. She heard the low chatter of the others, their voices hushed as if they were afraid of the winds carrying their words back to Ba Sing Se and the new ruler that sat on the throne. She listened as Sokka asked about Aang and Katara replied, her voice quivering, that he would live. The Earth King spoke with his bear like a small child seeking comfort from a stuffed animal.

She finally straightened up and stretched her arms, a yawn escaping from her lips. "So what's the plan for getting Iroh out of there," she muttered as she rubbed her eyes.

"What plan?" Sokka replied quickly.

"That's what I'm asking you. You're the plan guy."

She heard the rustle of fabric as Sokka shifted uncomfortably. "We're not going back. We can't go back."

"What!?" she cried, surprising herself with her angry tone. "We have to go back! We can't just leave him with them!"

"Why? So another one of us can get hurt?" It was Katara that replied this time, her voice full of anger, grief, and fear. "Listen to Aang. Listen to his breathing! If we go back, the same thing could happen to any of us! And for what? The uncle of that... that Fire Nation monster?"

Toph turned away and bit her lip. "Yeah. I guess you're right." It didn't feel right, though. Heroes didn't turn their backs on friends, even when things got bad. They didn't leave them behind with people that would hurt or kill them.

But even the world's most powerful Earthbender couldn't fight every enemy in Ba Sing Se. She wiped a tear from her eye. "Where are we going, then?"

"Far away."
