I looked at when my last post had been: 29 July. Yowza.

A couple of folks have asked me why I haven't been on LJ and my first response has been to say "eh, nothing ever happens to write about." That's not really true though, lots of stuff goes on (nothing exciting, mind you), but I guess I just haven't felt much like writing it down.  I'm still not ( Read more... )

I'm used to be the "odd ball" that doesn't like Colorado. =)

A lot of it very well could be COS. Between the commercialization (does any town really need 6 Target stores?), the military presence (and what that brings with it), and Focus on the Family, COS is not the place for me. But I do my best to respect and ignore. =)

Colorado is a beautiful state and one I'd be thrilled to visit and explore the best of. But *living* here hasn't been ideal for me. So many things go into that though (and not the least of which is that I loved where I had been living). =)

But it's missing a lot of things I enjoy: lush green, lots of water, a different kind of fall. I went out looking for the best in Colorado fall this year - at higher altitudes - and it was lovely. Gorgeous even. Just not what *I* think about and love about the season.

But the deal-breaker for me and CO is that I don't feel like I have a lot of options for places that I can get to in a day, and back, to explore. I like to spend a couple of weekends a month doing that - exploring by non-highway roads. There are lots of natural things to get to, yes. But that's not all I'm looking for. *shrug*

I've explored a lot in the mountains. For towns I've headed to Boulder (a lot), Denver (a lot), Cheyenne, into Kansas and Nebraska. Down to the Taos area, even as far as Santa Fe for day trips (which was a bit too long for just a day). *laugh*

If you have any suggestions or thoughts - I am totally open to 'em! I'm really working to like where I live. =)

I live in Nederland, CO these days and we have no Target stores! :D

COS: I hear you on all accounts.

Lush Green: It doesn't really exist in large areas in Colorado. There are some areas right along the foothills on both sides of the Divide, with a lot of deciduous trees and shrubs. The main problem is that we are too high up in elevation.

Fall: As much as I like aspen trees at the higher elevations, the best fall colors seem to be along the creeks, like in Boulder along Boulder Creek.

Day Trips: I highly recommend the book, The Colorado Guide by Caughey and Winstanley. http://www.amazon.com/Colorado-Guide-5th-Updated-Best-Selling/dp/1555915760/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1227566061&sr=8-1
I have an old edition that is probably nearly 20 years old, but I am amazed at the amount of information that is contained in it. You can look up any town and it will list all of the sights to see and even special events that are held throughout the year. There are driving directions to things to see that are accessible from that town.

But overall, it sounds like Europe or the New England area might be best for you. If you guys ever find yourself heading towards Nederland, send me a message and meet up for food/drink (or a hike).
