There really is just something about this scene that left such a big impression on me when I watched it. From the moment that Elena descends the stairs to find that Damon has taken his MIA brother's place as her escort to the hesitant smile on Elena's face and the genuine one void of all pretense on Damon's which all goes back to them sustaining that trust that has become the foundation of their relationship. And you capture the essence of the Damon/Elena relationship so well: the confusion, the hesitancy, and finally just giving in to the moment. And you do it with such beautiful restraint when other authors would have jumped the gun to put a label on their feelings when the characters themselves have barely acknowledged that they're there, let alone figure them out. I also loved the glimpses of the Damon Salvatore the gentleman of 1864; so refreshing. Don't get me wrong, I love me some snarky Damon but rarely are we privy to the "polite and innocent" side of him that we forget that he was once like that as a human. There's something very tragic about that. So my heart broke a little for him when he was reflecting on past memories.

Your Elena voice was pitch-perfect, I thought. In most fanfictions, Elena comes across as a little whiny and sometimes downright rejecting when it comes to her view of Damon but I like to think that Elena isn't that judgmental. Just a little guarded and understandably so.

Had you not mentioned that this was your venture into writing for this fandom, I wouldn't have been able to tell because it was really good. Hopefully it won't be your last! :D

Thank you so much. I love reading people's reactions because they always show me things I hadn't seen while I was writing. I would love to know much more about Damon's past. Because the more we discover, the more we find out he was a good man, maybe a little mischevious, but a good person. It gives the measure of how much he went through and suffered (to the point of switching his emotions off entirely because that was the only way to survive.) So much of Damon's story just breaks my heart.

Re: the restraint in naming the characters feelings, I did my best to avoid that. I wanted it to be "organic" (implied in D's and E's thoughts, but not verbalized.) Still, I slipped a few times in early drafts. Many thanks to my betas for catching those mishaps!

Awww, I'm really happy you like Elena's voice. Her part was surprisingly easy to write. I guess I get her? I don't know. Compared with the agony of writing Damon, Elena was a walk in the park! I plan on writing an Elena POV story pretty soon. I don't feel too much pressure now, since we have a hiatus in the show. I hope to get it out soon.

And yes, I agree there is something special about this scene. It's mesmerizing, somehow. To me, it's the best DE scene so far because each time I watch it, it makes me smile to see D and E happy, if only for a short moment. It gives me hope for them because it's like they laid the foundation of their relationship during that dance. It gives me hope for them. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! It was great to read your thoughts on my little story.
