Yeah, cause the way it ended, we could start all over again, your know! Comments under the cut...
I thought that as far as series finales go, Alias' was pretty good. It kept me watching. I gasped a couple of times (Jack!!!) The action was tight and justified. The story mostly followed a logic. There were lose ends, but I've always been much more lax about Alias' storylines than with most series because it's fantasy. So you can pretty much put anything you want there so far as it sort of holds water.
A friend asked a few questions on the subject. Let's see if I can answer:
+the significance of the artifact? I think it was supposed to be the essence of Rambaldi, his immortality, which was "reborn" in Sloane (shudder!) I loved the ending they gave Sloane. Like the prophecies in Buffy, the stars fell from the sky, and there was destruction, Rambaldi was reborn, but only so Sloane can spend eternal life alone, abandonned even by his ghost of a daughter (I liked how they walked the fine line between Sloane's possible insanity and the element of the supernatural with Nadia's ghost. Very Alias.)
+ Was the whole point of the genocide plan just financial - rebuilding Washington and London?
I think the missiles were just a trading item for an artefact that Irina had. Irina wanted ultimate power. She probably didn't care if Sloane's Rambaldi quest would be fruitful. Sloane wanted eternal life... Well, he got it! :-) Just not how he thought... Prophecies suck! :-D
+ did Sark not tell him that although he blew up the building, all but one of the APO crew made it out alive?
I don't think Sark said anything about that. Dixon or Jack said that to Vaughn, I believe. But I could be mistaken.
+ Marshall scenes in particular.
Bow to the God Marshall! He was awesome last night! I loved seeing his wife also. Very cool.
The most shocking for me was Jack, because he is this rock, you know. He just can't die. And actually, we didn't see his body, so maybe some of the Rambaldi mixture will have gotten on him and he'll be back! Yeah! Same goes for Sloane. A little earthquake and he may not be pinned down any longer and then...
I felt sorry for Tom. We never got to see his character much, but it looked like it would have been an interesting one to follow. I liked the little moment between him and Rachel before the explosion. Nicely done.
Dixon assistant Director? Of course. He would be. Irina, totally evil after all? I don't know. I think that's probably the weakest point in the finale. What has been so interesting about Irina was her ambivalence. It was a pity to abandon that at the end. Even though I think it's fitting that she died, everything preceeding the death should have played out more subtly, I think.
The last images were also very fitting with Syd and Vaughn living in an isolated paradise even Dixon has trouble finding. I liked that Sark (loved his "I'm not very keen on world destruction" or something like that... He almost seemed to have a--gasp--"conscience" at times, last night. This could have been an interesting development of his character,) slimey little thing that he is, managed to squeeze out of his "predicament," and lived to be hunted again by Sydney, in one of her occasional gigs for the CIA. Even spies gotta to pay the bills, and all those diapers, right? ;-)
All in all, very happy with it. A fitting end for Alias with everyone accounted for. And many things are left open, so a special 2-hour Alias, "The final death," could still happen. I'll be watching for that... :-D
