It had been a long, long day.

Cop cases were always longer days than most, and this one had hit especially close to home. Angell had been a good friend to him over the years, and now, she was gone. None of them had even had a chance to say goodbye and that was what hurt most of all. Of all the people that deserved to be taken from them unexpectedly, Angell certainly wasn’t one of them.

He had just finished talking Flack into going home-it was hitting him worst of all, given the nature of his relationship with Angell-and he had just managed to put the taller detective into a cab when he looked up and saw Anna coming out of the precinct. He knew that she was taking this case particularly hard as well. She and Angell had been close friends, and losing a friend like that was hard on everyone involved. Which only meant that there was another person he had to talk to before he headed out to the bar for the evening-not that he minded. People needed to talk, and Anna had been there for him earlier in the year, when things had gotten rough. The least he could do was return the favor.

“Sheldon,” she said with a small smile, when she caught him making his way closer. “I thought you were gone already.”

“Just wanted to make sure Flack left his desk,” Hawkes said with a small smile. “It’s hard, losing someone like that.”

“Yes,” she nodded, swallowing heavily as she wrapped her arms around herself more. “It is.”

Hawkes nodded quietly for a moment, hands in his pockets. “How’re you holding up?”

“Me? I’m fine,” she said softly, one hand coming up to brush just under her eye lightly. “Everything’s intact, no bullet wounds-I’m just fine.”

“That wasn’t what I meant, Anna,” he said gently, moving forward and placing a hand on her arm lightly. “Are you okay?”

Anna was quiet for a moment, before a pained look crossed her face and she shook her head, tears starting to come a little harder. “No, I’m not.”

Hawkes sighed softly, before pulling her into a warm hug. Hugs didn’t seem to be going around often enough today, and he let her cry herself out on his shoulder, taking whatever time she needed. When she was finished, she looked up at him with a grateful smile, pulling away to wipe her eyes.

“Thanks, Sheldon,” she said with a sigh. “I needed that.” She paused for a moment, before looking over at him. “Oh-your shirt-”

“I have more shirts,” Hawkes said quietly, before placing a hand on her shoulder. “Are you heading home?”

“No, actually-Stella told me about the memorial at Sullivan’s. I was going to head over there with everyone.”

Hawkes nodded, sliding an arm around her shoulders and turning her in the direction of the bar. “Mind if I walk with you?”

Anna gave him a small smile, before nodding and following his lead. “Not at all.”
