Personality;
Kotomine Kirei is an empty man.

Born to a Vicar and raised to do good under God’s gaze, one can say he was destined to be an exemplary figure of a person who put all their trust in God. People see his trust in God as unrivaled, and his stoic nature a reminder to them that this is a man to not trifle with. People know his view of the world is one of “good” and “evil”, and his dedication to his tasks stems from him seeking to master it.

What people fail to realize, even those who say are closest to him, is that all of their assumptions of him are misplaced. While his faith in God is true, he still finds himself doubting. While people see him as a serious man, he sees himself as someone who has little to say. His dedication to any given task is not to achieve something, but to understand the nature of it. His view on the world is that of “good” and “evil”, but he acknowledges the gray areas as well.

In short, Kirei is a man still searching for something.

He still does not know what it is, given that for the past three years of his life was preparing for a war to support his mentor’s victory. His life then and now is one who switches lifestyles like a person goes through television shows - stay a few minutes (months, years), check how the show is (train until you’re one step away) and switch to a different channel when you lose interest (it’s not the answer you were looking for). Before the start of the war, he was studying as a magus under Tohsaka Tokiomi on Church orders. Before he studied magic, he was part of the Holy Church’s 8th Sacrament like his father. Before the 8th Sacrament, he was in Shura’s Den, the bloodiest department of the Church where they earned the title of Executor. Before Shura’s Den, he was in another department. And another. And before joining the Church, he was on his way to a career that would have made him a minister.

Despite not finding the answer he was looking for, Kirei excelled in the fields he went to. In school he was considered a prodigy since he skipped two grades, became student council president and graduated at the top of his class. In Shura’s Den he became a first class Executor, a position only below those of the Church’s Burial Agency. As Tokiomi’s student, he attained the competency of an average level magus despite only studying for three years and his healing skills were found to be of bishop level. His has many skills at his arsenal, but has a few that he truly mastered since he is a jack-of-all-trades, master of none; he is ruthless and efficient when it comes to any task appointed to him, but will step away when he finds the mold of that life doesn’t fit him.

Trained to be merciless in combat, Kirei is not a man that can be easily jostled by emotion, no matter how human he may be. Love, amusement, sadness, and anything else that has a definable range are emotions he can comprehend yet he does not let them affect him on any form - the only exceptions are when someone pikes his interest, whether it be a person in a similar state of being (Kiritsugu) to someone fighting for a cause above themselves (Kariya), or a concept he cannot understand (why protect him when you know you will die, he is the same like me-). Once he takes interest, it’s impossible for him to let go. For him, if there is an answer to his question, he will endlessly pursue it even if it means his own demise.

Kotomine Kirei is not just an empty man. He is an empty man searching for answers.
