Being a guy who needs new music all the time, I hear from lots of folks what bands they are into and swift looks of hatred when I politely tell them what I never heard of 'so and so.' Usually I'm too busy, lazy or stuck at work when these bands are suggested, thus being unable to acquire samples or full tracks of 'so and so' as to either deny or support this person's love. Well, recently I was able to listen to someone's suggestion and was proved wrong. The band someone had suggested was called Goldfrapp. The key description this nameless hero gave me was 'English Techno Pop, with Rock and Trip Hop influences.' Now, normally I'd giggle to myself that someone would ever listen to something desribed as 'English Techno Pop,' but the fact this person was so proudly in love with an 'English Techno Pop' band, I just had to find out what it was. So I head over to my favorite music sampling site: www.samgoody.com(you'd be surprised how many samples and obscure bands they have listed there) and check this Goldfrapp out. First song I check is Black Cherry and it is absolutely amazing. Scared that I could like something in this genre, I tell myself to listen to 2 other songs; for surely I will find something with which I can ground myself again. Nope, turns out this band is absolutely great, and I proceed to hunt down some torrents for these guys. Well, this was about 2 months ago...and my mind was opened that day like Arnold pulling open the silverware drawer for a spoon to mix himself a delicious glass of Tang. Since then, I've been listening to things I never would have found on my own; saving my mind from a very musically sheltered, sad existence. The point of this article? Don't be afraid to listen to someone's suggestion; just because you hang out with a bunch of Folk singers doesn't mean that's the end of the road. Listen to a rap CD and give it an honest chance. You like what you like and should never be ashamed of it.
