On Internet Personalities

So, as most people would know (well, most who know me would), I am a HUUUUUUUUUUGE TGWTG fan. I love the NC, I love the Spoony One, I love the NChick and I loooooooove Linkara. I watch the vids from most of these people even if I have no idea about the subject matter. I'm not a gamer and I don't watch many movies or read comic books but I can generally identify with what they're feeling and enjoy their brand of comedy.

Now, not everyone on the site is someone I can follow. It's no fault of theirs, I just don't happen to be into their style. I don't watch Game Heroes - though I'm sure they're all talented, I only rarely watch AngryJoe - who rocks even if I don't get much of what he's saying - and while Paw is the music guru, I can only occasionally identify with the music he likes. It's nothing against them, I just don't happen to be into their videos that much. I still appreciate their contributions to the site and I love to see them in action, particularly at events.

One thing I can say about everyone on the site is I really do think they work their asses off to produce good quality reviews. While I may not agree with the format of some or think people occasionally fall off in quality, I still appreciate that they're working hard to produce good products. Yet somehow, this makes me feel beneath them. Not in the 'oh you think you're better than us?' sense but in the sense of they are that great and awesome, being able to produce this stuff, and I can't even fathom the amounts of work, time and effort going into making these wonderful shows.

So when one of these producers actually says and comments on things that I really feel strongly about outside of videos and actually comments back to me (because I will try to leave feedback for the videos I watch since they all deserve to know people care about their stuff), that's a really moving thing for me. I don't just feel like some random fan idolizing their work but like I've gotten, for a short while, the great privilege of being able to have a conversation with someone I admire. They all have a lot of people commenting on them and do not have time to personally reply to every pat on the back or question people have - though they do try, even if it's just a thanks in a video.

Now, I like different reviewers for different reasons. For example, The Critic and Linkara are both really cool, bash stuff I find amusing and I like their comedy. Some other people on the the site, however, I like for different reasons. For example, I love seeing Familiar Faces from CR because the art's usually interesting and it's fun to either remember characters I knew and loved or be told about ones I'd never heard of. A lot of shows on there do bring up nostalgic things to bash them or tell their virtues but a show about characters is something sort of new and different that I can get behind.

But the reason I am on this whooooooole spiel is because of one of my favorite reviewers: Lee from Still Gaming. He's got a very down to earth style, I feel, and he's an enthusiastic goofball. He reviews stuff that I mostly would never have seen but find interesting to watch (even if I don't know about half of the stuff he means since I am not a gamer) and he reviews in a fun style that I enjoy. I don't feel like I'm watching a comedy show  or review, but instead sitting there listening to a friend show me a game and tell me what he thinks of it - he'll go off on tangents about his past, stuff he likes and hates, etc. Hell, sometimes he'll reference other reviewers cause he's a fan of them (which is especially cool when it's someone I'm a big fan of too). It's awesome and really fun for me to get to see his stuff and I was actually pretty sad that he hadn't been able to produce new stuff lately (I figured he was busy and he confirmed that in one of his new videos).

Anyway, his most recent videos have been about baseball cards. I didn't know jack shit about those - I'm not into the sport and I thought, every time I saw them, "hey, these are dumb looking cards". However, he told the story of how when he was young, his dad had bought him baseball cards with the idea of 'some day these'll be worth a lotta money' and then went on to be annoyed at the people in a video talking about the prices of things and how crappy baseball cards have gotten, etc. It's a really neat set of videos and I suggest people watch since even if you aren't a fan of cards, it's easy to get behind him in his annoyance with it and I personally really liked the emotion he put into it. You could tell that this was a major part of his life and just seeing it was cool. Especially when he was talking about how he felt betrayed by a bunch of his childhood heroes when they turned out to be in drug scandals and whatnot. This is just sorta evidence about what I like about him as a reviewer.

Back on topic, he recently put out a sequel video to the baseball cards one that was sort of showed what he was talking about in how the cards are a total ripoff. However, at the end of it, he put a little clip of the baseball cards all strewn on the floor and a kitty playing with them, which in a text screen at the end of the video he said was called Luna and that she'd been abandoned. This was an adooooooooorable cat, and she only had one eye so it was super sad that she'd been abandoned to begin with. Now, I'm not a crazy animal lover, though I do tend to like dogs and cats - particularly cats. So finding out that they took in an abandoned cat really made me happy and in my comment (where I was mentioning why I liked the baseball card videos he did, since he had no clue why people liked them) I mentioned hoping he'd give Luna an extra pat for me and that it sucked that she was abandoned.

Now, when I made this comment, I didn't think I'd get a reply. I mean, she's a cute kitty, I was sure tons of people would probably be like 'aww, I'm glad she's okay' and he wouldn't get to respond to them. I'm used to making comments like this on things all the time and people not being able to reply (which is cool - they have other stuff to do, I don't blame them). But Lee actually replied and told me the story of where the cat had come from and said at the end that he'd given her the extra pat and thanked me. That was just really really heartwarming - I didn't feel like some random person commenting on a video but a concerned friend for a few minutes, and it was kinda cool. We talked for a few more comments about thinking the old owner was a scumbag bitch for abandoning Luna (and apparently one other cat and some kittens).

This isn't really me doing a whole 'ooh, someone replied to me therefore I'm speshul' thing. Other people who commented got replied to - in fact, Lee's replied to me before (I once mentioned being very very confused by what he was talking about and he gave a cryptic hint in response) and he does reply to a lot of his commenters, as did Dena who answered someone's question about Luna. But for some reason, it really felt awesome to know that he cared enough to tell me the situation and give her the pat I'd sent (since I didnt' think hugging a cat would be appropriate).

A couple days later, Dena posted a still gaming video about Adventure. It was a nice video and I made a few small comments, including mentioning I thought her hair looked nice, since it did. She responded to me, sorta surprised cause she hadn't like it herself.

This is all really insignificant stuff on a whole. But it was kinda cool. I tend to make really really stupid comments on things (not like the HAHA UR DUMB U SUK kind but more the random and sorta off topic like 'your hair looks very nice' kind) along with the general 'this was a very nice video, good work' sort of thing. So getting replied back to a few times, and something beyond a general 'thanks' or whatever, it was cool. I like getting replies from people to my random comments anyway - even on lj when I comment on communities - but when it comes from someone I really admire, it's so very awesome.

Anywho, that wasn't very important but I felt like saying so XD

TL;DR: I got to comment back and forth to a producer I think's cool for a few seconds about his cat. It was awesome.
