“I have a serious question for you.”

Chloe’s warm eyes met mine and she pursed her lips. “I didn’t realize you did serious.” She teased.

“Stranger things have happened. Just last week I actually enjoyed my meal here on the Destiny.” I quipped.

“Will wonders never cease.” She nudged my foot playfully under the table.

I felt the corners of my mouth curl up into a smile. “You have to promise to tell me the truth.”

She rolled her eyes. “Eli, just ask me already.”

“I want your solemn vow. The truth.”

She froze. “Now you are worrying me. Is everything okay?”

I bit back a laugh and kept my face neutral. “Promise first.”

She raised her right hand and blurted. “I swear, no lies.”

I leaned back in my chair and drew in a deep breath. “I need to know something very important.” I swallowed and looked down at my hands resting on the table. She reached out and grabbed them.

“You can ask me anything, Eli. You should know that.” She whispered.

I nodded and met her worried gaze. “Chloe, I need to know…does this shirt make me look fat?”

Her eyes widened. Her mouth opened then closed. And then she laughed long and hard. It was music to my ears.

She yanked her hands from mine and slapped my arm gently. “You are such an ass.”

“I know.”

“Thanks though.” She ran her fingers through her hair.

“For what?”

“For cheering me up.” Her hands rested on top of mine again.

“Anytime. But you still haven’t answered my question.”

She shook her head and sighed.

“I asked Greer the same thing yesterday. He told me no but you know how he is, too polite to ever be honest about something like that. He’d rather not hurt my feelings.”

I could tell she was struggling to keep from smiling. “Yeah. He’s famous for telling those little white lies all the time. But I can assure you he wasn’t just sparing your feelings on this one. You look just fine.”

“Well that’s a relief. Considering this is the only shirt I have.”

We both laughed then. And I like to think for a just a few minutes we both forgot all about the danger we were constantly facing on this ship. That we were eating protein paste and far away from our loved ones.

For just a few minutes we were safe and happy. Perhaps the greatest lie of all. I didn’t care. Out here you had to take what you could get.
