He looked so alone. Kahlan knew all about being alone. It was the curse she carried. A knowledge that she could never really be with anyone. Not unless she wanted them as her slave.

She watched Richard put his hands near the fire, his gaze became unfocused, as his eyes tracked the dancing flames. He rubbed at his bruised face with slightly unsteady hands. Hands which she longed to feel on her skin. Caressing her hair.

Kahlan shook her head. That was a dangerous way of thinking. Only an hour ago she had told Richard the truth. A truth he had already known. She had been too late. He never should have had to find out that way.

Kahlan could still see Denna’s smirking, vile face.

But she was dead now.

“Are you going to come warm up by the fire or stand there staring at me all night?” Richard’s warm, teasing voice wiped away some of the weight that was pressing on her heart.

“I’m sorry, I was lost in my thoughts.” Kahlan stepped forward.

Richard smiled up at her, it was a sad one, but a smile nonetheless. He patted the ground next to him. She took the invitation and slowly sat down.

He was quiet for a few moments. “I’ve been lost in my thoughts as well.”

“Oh,” she whispered.

“You know I’m not scared of you right?”

“I like to hope not.”

He scooted closer, their hips were now only inches apart. He reached out and touched her cheek. “Never. I know you would never hurt me.”

Tears filled Kahlan’s eyes. “You’re wrong Richard. I already did. Not only did I abandon you, but I let HER be the one to tell you something I should have said months ago. I let my fear of what you’d think hold me back. I even liked pretending sometimes. There were moments, when I even forgot.”

“Forgot what,” his voice was barely a whisper.

“That we couldn’t be together.”

“See, that’s what I’ve been thinking about. I know we can’t…give into our passion. Who says that means we can’t be together? I love you, Kahlan. I know you love me too.”

Tingles of some unseen energy, maybe excitement, sent a chill down Kahlan’s spine.

“If all we do is bury our feelings, they’ll only get stronger, and maybe one day, if we ignore them too long, they’ll consume us. But if we let ourselves feel them, allow ourselves to be together in everyway but...” He gave her a shy, but somehow desperate smile.

“Richard,” she honestly was at a loss. She wanted to say yes, wanted to believe they could be together without giving in to their passion. “What if you’re wrong?”

“What if I’m not?”

Kahlan swallowed. Her heart pounded against her chest. Zed would not like this, but Richard was right about one thing. She did love him.

“Aren’t you tired of suffering?” Richard reached his hand out, she took it without thinking. It felt right. Touching him. Being near him. Maybe this could be enough. They both knew what would happen if it ever went too far. What was at stake.

“We have to trust ourselves, Kahlan. If we can’t do that, who can we trust?”

She felt something in her snap into place. This was right. They could do this. A smile erupted on her lips. That weight that had been on her heart for months was gone.

Richard’s grin bordered on ecstasy. He kissed her softly on the lips, then pulled away while wiping a tear off her chin. “No more pretending.”

“Agreed.”

“And who knows, maybe one day, things might change.” Richard breathed.

“Maybe.” Kahlan couldn’t stop smiling. Maybe the feeling would fade tomorrow, but for now, with her head on Richard’s shoulder, and her fingers entwined though his, anything seemed possible.
