Several months had passed since they’d lost Ellen, and so many others.

Much had happened.

After Roman’s death his army had scattered, and lost a sense of purpose. The Bounty hunters and mercenaries hadn’t been invested in his cause, they’d simply wanted to get paid the rest of their promised reward. Once it became clear there was no one left to pay them, they’d vanished into space.

Sam’s Separatist fleet and Meg’s band of thieves had joined forces and helped the Republic to destroy the droids, and ships. Many had surrendered once they’d seen their dead leader’s body. Sam had hacked into their systems, and they’d transmitted it all over the holo-net.

There wasn’t someone who could replace the Sith Lord, and most of them had been hired hands. A few had made a suicide run at the planet, but Sam’s ships had shot them down.

And some surprise help had come in the form of Bela Talbot. She’d loaned them some weapons she’d procured; she’d even helped out in several battles. And even more shocking, she hadn’t run away yet. She was still around, helping locate food, and resources for those who’d been left homeless. She was quite talented at monitoring it all, and making sure things got where they needed to go.

Cas was more than a little proud.

They’d even shared a few meals together.

The only real problem had been with the remains of Roman’s Dark Jedi army.

But they had been severely outnumbered, and when Roman died, whatever sanity they had left seemed to shatter. They became more reckless, and in some ways easier to kill.

With the help of some serious firepower and the remaining Jedi, most had been captured or killed.

The streets were still coated with blood, and the planet would have lots of scars, but they would survive and endure. It would take time; a lot of it to repair the damage the Sith had caused in such a short time.

And some things couldn’t be replaced, but at least they had a future, one of freedom, not oppression under a tyrants rule.

Meg had slipped away after the fighting had died down, but she had kept up her end of the deal. They’d try and track her down later, but right now they had bigger things to concentrate on.

All in all there were more surviving Jedi than they’d thought. Some had been off planet, and more had been discovered injured in the temple over the weeks that followed. They were greatly weakened, and most of their leaders were gone, but the order would go on.

In time, they too, would recover.

In light of their actions to save the Republic - he, Dean, and Anna had been reinstated as Jedi - and honestly most of the surviving Jedi were looking to him and Dean for leadership. Things were changing - and the three remaining council members were backing them up, supporting them.

Even Crowley - Although he wasn’t as respectful about it.

Cas swallowed. They had just been doing their jobs - protecting the innocent, fighting evil. But the way everyone looked at them, as if they were heroes, it was going to take some getting used to.

But now wasn’t the time to dwell on it.

Now that the fighting had simmered down to nothing but a few skirmishes, the Jedi wanted to mourn their losses.

They were going to honor all the fallen; a candle was going to be lit for each soul that had been lost.

Cas pulled his robes around him, and stepped out of he and Dean’s chambers. They were all staying in an apartment, in a relatively undamaged part of the city.

He still missed their room at the Separatist base, and a part of him hoped they might be able to go back someday, but they were needed here.

And would be for awhile.

Still, this place was feeling more and more like home everyday.

Dean was home.

And Anna, Sam, Bobby - they were all his family, and as long as they were here, Cas was content.

He found Dean looking out over the balcony, watching people walk by on the streets.

“Hey.” Cas leaned into him.

Dean smiled, it didn’t quite reach his eyes, but it was enough. Since Ellen’s funeral, he was doing better, still hurting of course. Castiel knew he’d had nightmares about her death on more than one occasion.

Cas had, had his own. They’d seen so much death.

He only hoped tonight would help Dean push past it all. Help all of them move forward.

“Hey,” Dean replied leaning into Cas’s touch.

“You ready?”

“Yeah. I think I am.”

They took hands, and headed towards their hover car. It was even black, like the one Dean had described that day as they watched the cars drive past on Devon Four. They had found it totaled in the wreckage that littered the city. Bobby had helped Dean fix it up, and now it looked almost brand new.

Dean started the engine, his hand caressing the steering wheel briefly, before they took off into the streets.

*****

The area was beautiful.

It was outdoors, and had been decorated with brown, white, and blue ribbons. Chairs were scattered about, and a massive area on the ground was covered with candles of all shapes and colors. Down in the center of the field of candles was a long, narrow, white rug that could be used those wanting to walk through them.

Names had been carved into each one.

Dean had made Ellen’s; he and Cas had placed it yesterday.

Anna, Adam, Sam, Jessica, and Bobby were all waiting for them near the entrance.

They all exchanged hugs.

Jessica and Adam had arrived several weeks ago. Jessica had wanted to be with Sam, knowing he was going to stay for awhile to help rebuild.

Cas knew he was really staying for Dean, and he appreciated it. The two were truly family now, and it warmed Castiel’s heart.

And Adam, had come for Anna. They were holding hands; Anna looked at peace with him.

No one said much as Dean walked over to Ellen’s candle.

Bobby took off his hat, and watched, his eyes heavy with a grief that Cas knew would be with him for a long time.

Castiel couldn’t imagine how he’d feel if he’d lost Dean. He didn’t know how he would handle it. He was just grateful he hadn’t had to find out.

Dean knelt down, and bowed his head. After several moments he lit it; his fingers lingering over her name.

He stood, his eyes wet, but no tears fell.

“Without her, we wouldn’t be here. Roman would have won. Everyday we have free of him is because of her.”

They all nodded, and Cas pulled Dean close. “We won’t let it be for nothing,” he whispered.

“Damn right,” Dean replied, then kissed him on the cheek, and stroked his face.

Cas smiled.

“Let’s go sit for awhile.”

They headed for a clear patch of grass, and they all sat, watching as others lit candles, and said their goodbyes. Barely a hundred remained of a once powerful order, but still, Cas felt hope.

They had a future; a future so many had fought and died for.

It hadn’t been for nothing.

******

Bobby went off by himself, needing a moment alone.

He could feel his friends watching him as he walked away, but no one tried to stop him.

He appreciated that.

Bobby was torn between feeling pride and love for the woman he’d lost, and being angry at her for going and getting herself killed before he could see her one last time.

He leaned against a tree, and rubbed at his face.

“Balls,” he whispered into the silence.

“Long time, no see handsome.” A very familiar, and very impossible voice said from in front of him.

His hand jerked from his face; he stared in awe at the sight before him.

Several feet away stood Ellen Harvelle.

Her body shimmered, and was almost see through.

He gaped, then sputtered a few times.

She laughed. It was warm, and perfect, just like he remembered.

“What’s the matter? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Her eyes were playful, her tone teasing.

Bobby laughed, a small part of him wondering if he’d lost his mind, as he stared at her. “Is this real?”

“You know we Jedi have our tricks. Even in death.”

“How?” He blurted, something inside urging him to believe this wasn’t a dream, or a hallucination.

“I’m at one with the force.” She smiled cryptically, and he met her eyes.

And that same feeling he’d always gotten when she looked at him spread through his veins, and he knew this wasn’t a trick of his grieving imagination.

He nodded as if this explained everything, because in some ways, it did. “Well, whatever this is, it’s good to see you.”

She stepped closer to him. “You too.”

He picked at his shirt, his heart racing. He knew if he had something to say, now was going to be his last shot. Still, it wasn’t easy. It never had been for him, maybe if he’d been more open years ago, things would have been different for them. “I.,I‘ve… missed you.”

She sighed, her expression full of regret, longing, and sadness. “And I missed you. Everyday.”

Bobby swallowed, somehow surprised at her confession. It made him bold. “You know, after you, there was no one else. Just didn‘t feel right.”

She blinked, her eyes bright. “There was no one else for me either,” she swallowed, and took a deep breath. “A large part of me always regretted not leaving the order for you. But it was…complicated.”

Bobby thought about Dean, Cas, and Anna, and how she had helped them all over the years, and he understood that. He couldn’t imagine how many lives she’d touched, or saved .

He shook his head. “It’s okay. You had a higher calling and all that. I was just a mechanic with a bad attitude.”

“You are so much more than that Bobby Singer. And you know how I feel about wallowing.” She placed her hands on hips, and it hurt so much to not be able to touch her, to hold her again.

Their last night together before she’d been ordered to return to the temple had been the best of his life. He could still almost taste her on his lips; feel her body against his.

She was an impossible woman to replace.

Her eyes were wet; she stepped so close their noses were almost touching. “You know, this isn’t the end. We’ll see each other again.”

Bobby blinked. “You think?”

“Oh,” She smiled enigmatically, “I know it, but not too soon I hope. I need you to watch over my boys.”

He nodded. “They do have a way of getting into trouble.”

She grinned, then her expression softened. She lifted her hand, and held it up, her palm facing towards him.

Bobby lifted his own hand and pressed it up to hers. He could feel something, a warmth, an energy.

They stared at each other a few moments, before she let her hand drop.

“Take care of yourself; I’ll be waiting.”

Bobby’s heart still hurt, but it was a good pain. “You better.”

Then she was gone.

*****

Dean and Cas returned to their small apartment, and climbed into bed together. Cas pressed into Dean’s back, and held him close.

“You okay,” he whispered.

“I‘m getting there,” Dean breathed.

Cas kissed the back of his neck. “Good.”

His fingers slid underneath Dean’s waistband, and the other man groaned happily.

They hadn’t made love since before the attack on Coruscant. Their injuries, their grief, the stress, the chaos, the battles, but things were finally relatively calm, and Cas wanted to remind Dean about the good things in life.

The things they had been fighting for.

“Perhaps I could distract you for a bit,” he said quietly, not wanting to push if Dean wasn’t ready he added, “If you want me to.”

Dean rolled over, and he smiled. And this time it did reach his eyes.

“Cas, you can distract me whenever you want.”

Cas grinned, and captured Dean’s lips with his, melting into the other man’s strong embrace.

Cas smiled as Dean climbed on top of him; the familiar warmth and hunger were back in his green eyes, and Cas knew even though it might take awhile, Dean was going to be okay.

And for the first time since the battle had ended, Cas finally felt as if they’d won.
