Summary: After the destruction of the Reapers, Liara goes in search of the woman she loves.
Word Count: 808
Dr. Liara T’soni could barely breathe as she stepped off the shuttle and onto what was left of the planet. Earth had been decimated by the Reapers - but it had survived.
They had won - all thanks to Commander Kate Shepard - the woman whom Liara had loved, lost, then loved again. She wasn’t willing to believe after everything that this was the end for them.
Kate was too stubborn to die.
Her lips twitched in the barest hint of a smile as she thought of Kate, her blue eyes, full of need, and hope the last time they’d made love. Remembered the way her skin had felt, her hands callused from years of fighting, yet still so gentle. Her hand twitched as she thought of how silky Shepard’s raven black hair had felt when she ran her fingers through it.
You mean everything to me Liara, you always will.
Kate’s words in their last moments before she’d charged forward with no thought for her own safety. Shepard never did, she was a hero, and she’d given up so much to keep the galaxy safe.
Her eyes burned, but she fought it.
No this wasn’t the end - Shepard deserved more than this.
They deserved more than this.
Liara knew she was young, still not much past one-hundred, but she had changed a lot. She’d seen too much. She wasn’t the naïve so-called Prothean expert she’d been the day her and Kate had first met.
She almost laughed at how much she’d idolized the Prothean’s; reality was a bitter pill to swallow at times.
And she’d fallen in love for the first time in her life - Liara knew that accepting the loss of a partner was a requirement for an Asari. When your species lived to be over a thousand, there was a good chance you were going to outlive your lover.
But they had already had so much time stolen from them - Liara had just gotten Kate back, she couldn’t accept that she was gone again.
It just didn’t feel right - something inside of her - a prickle along her spine - an itch at the tips of her hair tentacles all told her the same thing.
Shepard wasn’t dead.
In her heart, she felt it.
It was why she’d refused to place that damned plaque on the memorial wall of the Normandy.
Liara lifted her head; her eyes searched the area - hope fueling her as she scanned the wreckage.
With Edi’s help, she’d managed to calculate the general area where Shepard would have fallen - where the remains of the citadel had crashed.
She could smell death, and the air tasted stale.
Liara stepped over rubble, choosing her path carefully, the ground was littered with debris.
She wasn’t sure how long she’d been searching, when a noise to her right had her jerking her head. Her eyes widened, her body tensed - she went still.
Liara heard it again.
Was that someone breathing?
The sound was a bit raspy, as if it were a struggle.
Liara called out, forgetting to watch her footing as she raced toward the sound. She leapt over pipes, and fragments of metal - narrowly avoiding tripping several times.
A cough; a moan.
She froze as she saw the familiar, yet charred N7 armor. The chest was rising and falling.
She heard herself gasp, then she was moving - time seemed to slow down with each step, her chest felt tight, her heart was in her throat.
Kate’s face came into view. Her eyes were closed, her face covered in bruises, blood had caked over her side.
“Shepard.” She knelt at her side, her fingers gingerly feeling for a pulse on her neck. It was weak, but it was there.
Kate’s flesh was so pale she was almost translucent; a crack in her lips bled as she whispered something too low for Liara to hear.
She radioed for help, and barely registered the reply that they were on their way. She was too focused on Kate’s eyelids as they fluttered, struggling to open.
Liara bent down, her lips inches from Shepard’s. Her hand clasped around Kate’s cool one, she interlaced their fingers. “Don’t you dare die on me,“ she breathed, tears falling freely from her eyes, and dripping onto Kate’s skin.
She hadn’t even realized she was crying.
“Liara,” Shepard’s voice was broken, and hoarse - it was the most beautiful thing the Asari had ever heard.
“I’m here,” she managed, her fingers stroking Kate’s face tenderly.
Shepard’s blue eyes opened, and she actually smiled. It was small, and weak, but it was real.
Liara bent down, and pressed her lips to Kate’s, breathing in her scent - and for the first time since the Reapers’s destruction, Liara actually felt as if they’d won.
A/N: This is my first time writing anything for the Mass Effect fandom, and it's also my first time writing femslash, I hope this doesn't suck.
