New to the series; here's a
Link to the Masterpost A few days had passed since their meeting with the council. Having some time to process, and discuss had helped clear Castiel’s mind.
They had a plan - they were going to continue to investigate Dick Roman and uncover who his collaborator on the council was - that hadn’t changed.
Castiel finished his daily stretches, and smiled at Dean’s slumbering form sprawled out on the bed.
They had contacted Sam and were going to meet him on Devon Four at Singer’s Salvage within the week.
Cas hoped he would trust them enough to allow them to join in the Separatist’s investigation.
Helping the Separatist’s was their best bet to save the Jedi from the threat within. This was bigger than holding a grudge, and to be fair they had disobeyed orders, and they had chosen to become intimate.
The council had been well within their rights to act.
Cas had his suspicions though - those images Master Walker had obtained, they had been taken awhile ago. Why had he waited so long to expose them to Crowley?
The only answer that made sense was that he had been waiting for the right time - perhaps they had gotten to close to the truth and he’d been instructed to reveal them. Or perhaps Walker himself was being used by someone else.
There was no way to be sure.
They were to meet with Ellen before they left today - Cas wasn’t certain how it would go, but he was willing to listen to what she had to say.
As was Dean.
His big regret in this was Anna.
He hoped to see her before they left, try to explain. There was a chance Ellen might help him arrange that.
Dean snorted a few times, and rolled over.
Cas smiled, and touched his lover’s face, peppering his cheeks, and forehead with feather light kisses.
Dean smiled, but didn’t rise.
Cas quietly showered, then changed into a clean pair of clothes. His shoulders felt bare without the weight of his familiar cloak upon them. He sighed - he would adjust.
The door chimed.
Dean groaned and his eyelids fluttered.
“I‘ll get it - go back to sleep.”
Dean mumbled something, then rolled back over.
“Who’s there?” Cas asked.
“It’s Kinsa.”
Cas smiled, and opened the door. “Is everything okay?”
She nodded, her tentacles vibrated slightly. “Someone is downstairs asking to see you.”
“Who?” He blurted- surprise making him speak louder than normal.
She smiled. “A young woman, with fiery red hair.”
Cas felt his chest constrict. “Anna,” he whispered. “I’ll be right down.”
When Cas turned Dean was wide awake, sitting up, watching him, his expression asking if he needed him there.
“I’ll be okay; I need to do this alone.” Cas answered the unspoken query.
Dean nodded his understanding, his expression somber.
Cas swallowed, took a deep breath, and headed down into the diner.

Cas didn’t know what he expected when he saw Anna.
For her to yell at him in anger or pain, for her to condemn him.
He didn’t expect his former Padawan to embrace him in a bone crushing hug the moment he finished descending the stairs.
His eyes burned, and his heart ached, as he returned the gesture, stroking her hair. “It’s so good to see you,” he managed over the lump in his throat.
He knew this embrace was yet another thing the council would have frowned upon. He was probably too ‘attached’ to his former Padawan as well. That no longer mattered; he held her tighter.
“You too, Master,” she murmured into his shoulder.
The word Master was akin to a punch in the gut. “I can no longer be that for you, Anna.”
She pulled away, her eyes fierce, and rebellious. “I don’t want to be trained by another.”
Cas’s heart both swelled and ached. “You were an amazing student.” Cas swallowed. “I was so lucky to have had the honor of being your Master.”
Her eyes were too bright.
“But you know the council will not allow me to continue training you.”
She opened her mouth to protest.
He held up his hand, and as always, she obeyed him. “Whomever takes over your training will be in awe of you, how brave you are, how strong, and how quickly you learn. I am so proud of you in every way; do not let my shortcoming’s bring you down. I know one day you’ll be one of the best.”
A tear was running down her face.
Cas wiped at it, his own eyes brimming with moisture.
“I’m sorry my choices have caused you pain.”
Her chin lifted, and she swiped at her eyes. “You’ve done nothing wrong in my eyes, Master.”
Cas stared at her in surprise. “I disobeyed orders, and I…” he swallowed, uncertain what all she had been told.
“You saved lives, you stopped a murderer.” Her eyes drifted up towards where he was sharing a living space with Dean. “And you followed your heart.”
Cas was too stunned to speak.
“I’ve suspected for awhile…I might be young but I’m not blind to the way he looked at you, and you at him.”
Cas knew he was gaping.
“It changed nothing for me then, and it changes nothing for me now.”
It took all he had to keep the tears at bay. “Thank you, Anna.”
She nodded.
He clasped both of her shoulder’s, and met her eyes. “You are like family to me. I may not be your Master anymore, but I’ll always be there for you if you need me.”
He could see her fighting the tears that had filled her vulnerable eyes again.
“You promise,” she whispered, and he was reminded of how alone he had felt at times in his life.
Being a Jedi could be lonely - you never knew your family, attachments were frowned upon, and the Master was expected to maintain some distance while still cultivating a relationship of trust.
It was a fine line to walk.
He embraced her again, and felt her melt into him.
“I promise.”

They were ready to board their shuttle in a few hours, Ellen had arrived to see them off, and to talk.
She had her arms crossed as she stared them both down from her seat across from them in the bustling diner.
“I’m surprised you’d want to meet with two rebellious, idiots like us, Master,” Dean broke the silence.
Ellen continued to stare at them for another few moments, then she sighed, and smiled. “Well, you two are definitely idiots - but what can I say, you’re my kind of stupid.”
Cas couldn’t help it - he smiled back.
Dean snorted.
Ellen uncrossed her arms, and leaned forward, her eyes softer. “Are you two happy?”
It was an unexpected question.
Dean and Cas’s eyes locked, he felt Dean’s hand cover his on the top of the table.
“Happier than we should be considering we just got the boot from the only life we’ve ever really known.” Dean grinned.
Cas smiled at him, then nodded in agreement to Ellen.
Ellen shook her head; her smile got wider.
“Good.”
Her face grew somber. “If it helps, I think the council was in the wrong. You both stopped a great evil, and you didn’t even get a simple thanks for your trouble.”
Cas shrugged, keeping his face neutral. “I made my choice - and the Council made theirs.”
She touched Cas’s wrist. “Thank you. I know how hard that must have been for you - facing him again.”
Cas swallowed, hoping his expression conveyed gratitude as he nodded. “I couldn’t have done it without Dean.”
She bowed her head knowingly. “Yes. Despite his ability to test my patience at every turn as he grew up, he’s a good man.”
“Hey,” Dean interjected, his expression offended.
She smiled at Dean affectionately. “Hush. You know I’ve always been proud of you.”
“Even now?” Dean challenged.
“Yes. And I’m happy for you both,” she sighed, “and sad for the order. Things won’t be the same without you two around.”
Cas’s heart ached - her words were a soothing balm to the events in the temple. He reached out and took her hand, squeezing. “Will you look after Anna?”
Her eyes seemed to get brighter. “Of course.”
“Thank you, Master.” Dean said, his tone full of gratitude.
She reached across the table and ruffled his hair.
Cas laughed, while Dean scoffed, and tried to pretend he’d hated it.
“I’m still here if you boy’s need me - if you need to talk - or if you find out anything you think I might find interesting,” her eyebrows raised, and she watched them.
Cas understood. She was still willing to help them expose the traitor.
“I assure you, we will be in touch.”
Ellen nodded, her eyes knowing.
He and Dean exchanged pointed glances. “Actually before we leave, there’s a few things we need to tell you.”
*****
Ellen had activated a scrambling device to keep anyone from listening in on their conversation and they’d filled in Ellen on their finding’s on Mustafar - she had believed them without question. She had also spent the better part of an hour working the situation out with them - dissecting what had transpired.
It was all so obvious now.
They had been getting too close to the truth - the Chancellor knew this. Exposing their relationship had been the perfect way to discredit them, and get them out of the way. Releasing Alastair had been a brilliant move as well - a gamble that had paid off.
Cas hated that he had probably played into a Sith’s hands, but there had been no other course of action in his eyes. He had reacted just as the Chancellor had probably wanted - in the process he’d discredited them even further in the council’s eyes.
There’s no way you could have known at the time Castiel -and if you hadn’t gone we wouldn’t know about the army of dark Jedi that are out there under his command.
He knew she was right - but it was still hard to swallow. This man seemed to have his finger in every pot, and he knew how to push their buttons.
And where had he gone that day they had left in search of Alistair - what he been doing?
He hoped Sam might have some more answer’s when they arrived.
Cas could see the worry in her gaze, the dark shadow hovering over her as she hugged them.
Cas watched her leave, his heart heavy. Dean’s lips were pressed into a thin line, and his eyes followed her as she slipped out the door.
In some ways, he felt as if they were abandoning her - next to a few other Jedi, they were the only ones helping her uncover the traitors within.
She was going to keep a close eye on Gordon Walker and Crowley. They were both involved in the images that had exposed them - and it was highly suspicious that they hadn’t revealed them sooner. Either Crowley had made that decision or Gordon hadn’t given them to him until recently.
Either way, they both needed to be watched.

Cas took one last look at Coruscant before he and Dean boarded the ship. It was a lovely world - one that was in more trouble than it realized. He didn’t know exactly what the Chancellor had planned, but his vision was still clear in his mind.
Dean touched his shoulder, his eyes searching - asking.
“I’m ready.”
Dean nodded, and they boarded - both leaving the only home they had ever had.
A/N: I admit, I might have teared up a little bit writing this part. Next fic should be up early next week, if not sooner.
