Hail Caesar!

Yesterday I took the rare move of abdicating myself of all responsibility as wife / mother / project manager / tutor / dog walker and went to the theatre, which I haven't done for many years.

The Royal Shakespeare Company brought their production of Julius Caesar to Cardiff and, good grief, it was wonderful. The action had been transposed to an African dictatorship, which gave the production a real contemporary relevance, and all the performances were spot-on. I was actually reduced to tears by a couple of scenes (Brutus and Portia's discussion, and Brutus' death) which is a first for me with Shakespeare, I think. The play has been one of my favourites since I studied it in school, and I impressed myself with how much I could still remember 25 years later!

The other main draw for me was that Brutus was played by Paterson Joseph, one of my favourite actors. http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2012/jul/01/shakespeare-and-me-paterson-joseph-julius-caesar Lowering the tone slightly, I greatly appreciated the style of costume that meant large expanses of male torso were displayed....

The production was filmed for the BBC as well, so I may be buying the DVD when it's released!
