This is how the world works

So, 9/11 happened a few years ago.

In America over the last 9 years, 9/11 has become the answer to every question from "What gives us the right to just march into other countries?" to "Hey, why have you taken french fries off the menu?"

The emergency services who responded first on 9/11 are seen as saints and their words are held up as gnomic truth. Proud patriots who embody the values of the new, post-9/11 America.

Then the 9/11 first responders started dying.

The US health system, which isn't a fascist communist nightmare like ours, refused to help them. A bill was introduced to make $7 million available for special care. It passed Congress, but was filibustered in the Senate. By the Republicans. The party who have made a living out of 9/11 for the last decade.

It looked like the bill wasn't going to pass before the Senate broke up for Christmas. Jon Stewart, who had mentioned it a couple of times, devoted his entire final show of 2010 to highlighting what was going on. You can watch it here (and you can find out here how to access Comedy Central from outside the US).

The bill finally got rushed through before Christmas. The New York Times credits Jon for the turnaround.

Jon Stewart is a comedian.
