Ayasegawa Yumichika
Yumichika was never meant for the slums, but that’s where everything started. He came from a poor family with an older brother and an older sister, the three of them and their parents all living in a neighborhood full of dead ends. Ever since he was a small child, there was something that set him apart from the other boys that he knew. He never really liked playing in mud puddles, or games that involved hitting each other with sticks and seeing whose bruises were bigger. When he was four, he wanted to be a ballerina, or maybe a flower arranger, but he was smart enough not to tell his parents this.
His family was close and loving, his parents good, honest people who worked hard to ensure a decent upbringing for their children. They never had a lot, but they always had enough.
Yumichika didn't like school much to begin with, everyone making fun of him for mannerisms he thought perfectly normal, and every year seemed to be worse than the last. Madarame Ikkaku was the only good thing that came out of four years of high school. In freshman year, the people making fun of him were suddenly a lot bigger, and much less enthusiastic about verbal sparring then they were about beating him to a decidedly un-beautiful pulp. This resulted in quite a lot of inelegant fights (which he grew to enjoy, not that he’d tell anyone) every time he refused to cave to the social pressures around him. But it also resulted in Yumichika meeting a bald-headed man fighting at his back, the first real friend he’d had in longer than he could remember.
Ikkaku and Yumichika had a good time after that, wandering around the school and the neighborhood picking fights with anyone who pissed them off, or who seemed like they’d be fun to fight. They would drink on the roof of Ikkaku’s apartment building in the evenings, and talk about every ridiculous little thing that sprang to their minds. For a while, Yumichika was truly happy, in a simple, basic way.
Then one day, the two of them were in a fight with a small gang of boys their age who had been mugging old women for loose change, intent on teaching them the value of picking on people their own size.
Yumichika had a gang member backed up against an alley wall, a hand on the boy’s shoulder and a smile on his face as he admonished him for his delinquency. Then, his hand began to tingle slightly, and he suddenly felt completely detatched from reality, feeling so good that he couldn’t think. When he came to, Ikkaku was shaking him, the boy he’d been pinning was dead on the ground without a single wound that should have been mortal, and there wasn’t a scratch on his body.
Afraid of the repercussions for themselves and their families, Ikkaku and Yumichika decided to run away. They were hitchhiking north when the police found them and dragged them back to the station. Instead of throwing them in jail, though, Yumichika was taken away from Ikkaku and into a room with some man he had never seen before.
Before Yumichika could begin to protest his innocence, the man told him that everything was settled. The case had been reviewed, witnesses had been spoken to, and he had a chance to be let go without so much as a blemish on his record--if he would consent to going to a special school, BFMI, and serving his country for a set period afterwards. Eager to spare his loved ones the shame of associating with a presumed murderer, he agreed. He was allowed to go home to say goodbye to his family and grab his things, then spirited away again, leaving nothing more than a few empty leave-in conditioner bottles, some bruises on his old enemies, and a quickly scribbled good-bye note to Ikkaku.
Hisagi Shuuhei
Shuuhei was the born an only child. He wasn’t raised in the best conditions, his family coming from a poor background. Despite this, his family was happy with what little they did have and led a simple life. As a child, he could be seen obediently following his mother and helping with chores.
The day came when his mother’s health began to deteriorate into the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Shuuhei and his father had to work harder to make ends meet with the addition of covering the medical bills. Fortunately, his uncle - also his mother’s brother and from the upperclass - was willing to help alleviate the financial burden in exchange that Shuuhei spend time on a regular basis with his cousin.
Often overlooked due to his parents’ busy schedules, Shuuhei’s younger cousin took to ordering him about as soon as they first met. Shuuhei was someone from whom the youngster could find the attention he yearned for. Shuuhei, on the other hand, had no qualms with the other’s behavior since the requests were always harmless and sometimes allowed him to receive free food when he was short on money.
The two children improved themselves and grew closer as they reached adolescence despite their initial leader-follower relationship. Having someone there for him helped his cousin develop greater self-confidence, as he began to open up more and treat Shuuhei on more equal footing. Conversely, Shuuhei was able to access better resources that would help further his education.
As Shuuhei was heading out to visit his mother one evening, he thought he saw something move out of the corner of his eye as he passed an alleyway. Not seeing anything, he continued but stopped when a fuzzy outline slowly passed by on his right-hand side. Other pedestrians in the area didn’t seem to notice anything out of the ordinary. There was also a faint whisper from his left.
The morning after, his father glanced at him curiously with a hint of shock in his eyes and brought up the ‘69’ tattooed on his face. It disturbed Shuuhei that he had no idea himself where the markings originated from. He only remembered experiencing pain where they now were that morning and the day before.
Over time, he started seeing strange shadows more frequently. A month after the first sighting, he discussed it with his cousin while walking through the park. Shuuhei received the three lacerations running down the right side of his face after shoving his cousin out of the way when two shadowy outlines darted in his direction. He had sensed a menacing presence from the larger one as they faded out of his vision and an inaudible whisper increased in intensity.
Upon receiving news that he was invited to attend Bleach Factor Magical Institute, he immediately decided to take up the offer. It was a wonderful opportunity to someone coming from the lower class and would provide a change of environment that might do him good and perhaps clear up what he had experienced in the past.
Hitsugaya Toushiro
From Hitsugaya’s earliest memories, he grew up in a foster home, never knowing his real parents. He led a simple childhood life, during in which he met a girl called Hinamori Momo, who later grew to become a dear childhood friend. They shared a lot of fond childhood memories, and because of his friend’s gullible nature, Hitsugaya had since young taken it upon himself to look out for Hinamori as best he could so that no harm would come to his best friend.
Then, the year Hitsugaya turned 10, he was adopted by an elderly lady and then moved away in the midst of teary goodbyes. From the foster home that he had known all his life, Hitsugaya moved into the city. There, he made a new friend -an older girl by the name of Matsumoto Rangiku. Matsumoto was a charming and cheerful girl. Although Hitsugaya did not approve of all her ways, Matsumoto proved to be a warm and caring friend. And with time, they really did hit it off well.
Hitsugaya was a brilliant child. So brilliant in fact, that his intelligence became quickly noticed by teachers and students the moment he entered first year in elementary school. However, he had never realized his gift or potential in magic until one day at the age of 12, he received a letter from the Bleach Factor Magical Institution. They were offering him a full scholarship, a place to study in their institution, and even live on their premises.
His baa-san was encouraging of course, but unimpressed with the idea of leaving his elderly guardian behind alone, Hitsugaya had refused the offer. But as the letters kept coming back, each one more insistent than the last, offering even to look out for his guardian during his absence, young as he was, Hitsugaya had begun to wonder about their true intentions. But finally, two women in smart suits had appeared at his doorstep one day, claiming to be admission officers of the BFMI. And with an almost threatening note, had insisted on bringing him into the Institution. Fearing for his baa-san’s well-being, Hitsugaya had reluctantly agreed to their offer, and was brought to the BFMI soon after.
With the assurance that his baa-san was well taken-care of, Hitsugaya gradually grew familiar with the ways of the Institute and Bleach Factor. He sped through the course, completing it in 3 years. And after passing a higher qualification exam and obtaining an instructors' license along with a few other candidates in his year, a job as an instructor in the BFMI had already been secured for him.
Ichimaru Gin
Ichimaru Gin was born an only child to parents who freely wasted their attentions on their precious child, filling his life with smiles. He was a rather normal child despite the fact that he always seemed unusually aloof and unnecessarily cheerful. It had been pointed out that there was something slightly 'off' about him, but everyone readily dismissed it as being in a strange stage of childhood that he would eventually grow out of.
He never did.
His family moved, once, to a nice little rural area not too far out into the land of nothingness, but a pleasant distance from the busy city. Ichimaru often went out on long, aimless walks to explore this new territory. He had been delighted when he discovered that there was an ancient graveyard nearby; he spent all of his free time there from that point on. This new behavior concerned his parents, wondering why their son would spend so much time in a depressing place over playing with friends. No serious attempts to stop him were ever made, though, since they valued the happiness of their child, no matter where he found it.
While he was off frequenting the graveyard, his parents had made friends with a neighboring family; their get-togethers had become the one exception to the leniency with their son, as he was always in attendance whether he wanted to or not. Fortunately, the other family had a child, Rangiku, but she was much too young to keep Ichimaru's company. Nevertheless, he managed to entertain himself by looking after her, acting as the big brother she never had.
At the age of sixteen, the boy received his letter from the Bleach Factor Magical Institution, though he'd not heard of such a place. He was clever enough to be able to convince his parents to let him attend the Institution under the pretense that it was an ordinary prep school he had secretly applied to; how could they refuse such an ambitious son? There was but one stipulation to his departure: Ichimaru told his parents to never make mention of his whereabouts to Rangiku -- whom he had been keeping in touch with less and less -- saying that he would do the deed himself.
He only returned to the graveyard before he left.
During his six years of normal study, Ichimaru excelled in the areas of potions and psychic arts, but most particularly in the subject of Necromancy. He'd discovered his animal companion, a female Hellhound whom he named Chronos, who was well-suited to aid him in the pursuit of his studies and eventual major in Necromancy; he graduated at age twenty-one, in the top of his field. By age twenty-three, the Necromancer had completed an additional two years of schooling to certify him as an instructor of his craft, as well as serving some time in the ranks of the Bleach Factor's forces. The next four years of his life were spent in independent study, learning things that ought not be taught in any self-respecting institution. Currently, at twenty-seven years of age, Ichimaru has returned to BFMI as the resident Necromancy instructor and serves as the Head of Falcon, his own former house.
Ise Nanao
Nanao grew up as the oldest child in an average upper-middle class Japanese family. She lived with her mother and her brother and sister, twins who are seven years younger than she is. Her father ran off with another woman while her mother was pregnant with her younger siblings, for which Nanao has never forgiven him. This lifelong resentment is a strong influence on her irritation with men who are overly flirtatious. Luckily, Nanao’s mother was the main breadwinner in the family anyway, so her father’s disappearance did not have a great effect on the family’s income. However, Nanao did have to grow up mentally faster and sooner than many of her peers because she had to help her mother care for her brother and sister. Once the twins were old enough that they could be left with a babysitter, Nanao spent more time with them than their mother did because of her job. From the time they were born on, she was generally more mature and poised than most children of her age.
Despite the large drain on her time caused by helping to raise her siblings, Nanao managed to keep a good reputation in school. Academic pursuits came naturally to her, and she excelled in many things. She tested into the most prestigious high school in her area, and consistently was one of the highest scorers in the exams taken by all students. Because of her achievements and her role at home, Nanao was frequently misunderstood by her fellow students. She had few close friends, and developed her trademark demeanor in order to distance herself from people she was not able to relate to. She did not date and turned more to books for companionship than her peers.
Upon graduating high school, she went away to college, much to the dismay of her siblings, who were quite devoted to her. In the beginning, she enjoyed her program. She was finally among like minded people, who enjoyed the same things she did and thought the same way she did. She became more open and had more friends than she did back in her hometown. After a time, though, even the classes she loved became monotonous and she became dissatisfied with the path her life was taking.
Soon, however, strange things began to happen. She began to see people and things that weren’t there. Such sightings weren’t constant, but rather ephemeral images seen out of the corners of her eyes. She wasn’t even sure if she was really seeing anything at all. Then one day, when whacking one of her male friends with the fan she always carried in hot weather, the fan suddenly glowed fiercely violet. Nanao was relieved when a few weeks later she received a letter inviting her to attend the Bleach Factor Magical Institution, for it meant that the images she had been seeing and the strange event with the fan were not something in her head. She eagerly accepted, excited about the opportunity to enter a whole new field of learning.
Kurotsuchi Nemu
Despite her kinship with Kurotsuchi Mayuri, Nemu did not meet him, let alone know him until she was seventeen years old. She is his niece on her father's side, sheltered from her uncle for his irrational obsessions with sciences and knowledge and biological whatnots, but that isn't to say that she's been what society would consider normal up until now.
Even as a child, particularly starting in the mid-years of grade school, Nemu has been somewhat of an outcast. There are no records of trauma or mental disorders, nor is she particularly depressed or angry. She has always been very indifferent, very apathetic, which is intimidating to grade schoolers and weird to junior high schoolers, and she was just plain nonexistent in high school. Those that were in touch with her or sat around her knew her for her paranormal tendencies; she has a knack for "telling the future" (when really it's just good guessing luck), albeit for the most trivial things, and she has a bestilling aura about her that will drive the normal away. She is also a beast at rock-paper-scissors, though if she were to best up against the likes of Iba Tetsuzaemon, she would still be no match.
There was a family reunion at one instance. She was seventeen, and here she met Mayuri. She was immediately intrigued, if only because he was so passionate in things that were far from mundane. He had work to do while he was there, and so she offered her help. While he didn't treat her with all warmth and happiness, she still appreciated that he let her help him. Despite whatever he may think, she feels that she formed some sort of connection.
Her parents received her fine. They say that she gets her calm and coolness from her mother and her intellect from her father. Her parents were reluctant to let her go attend Bleach Factor, not because of the danger she'd be put in as a student, but because they were aware that Mayuri teaches there. Because it was the first time that Nemu has really ever expressed particular interest over anything, they let her go.
Shihouin Yoruichi
Shihouin Yoruichi was born into an upper-class family, Yoruichi was the only daughter and heir to her family's wealth and legacy in an undisclosed industry. She spent most of her childhood studying martial arts to let out pent-up frustrations that stemmed from how stuck-up her family tended to be about the way she acted. They were more concerned about their blood being carried on positively than how their daughter felt about their selfishness. She often spent her time away from her home, choosing to hang around the poorer districts.
Her first friend was a boy named Urahara Kisuke. She found that the two of them had a lot in common and they became fast friends, meeting in the same spot every day to play together. They eventually became near-to inseparable.
She ended being exceedingly successful in her hand-to-hand combat, proving to be one of the strongest in her class and definitely one of the strongest females that her instructors had ever seen. She also had reflexes and speed that gave her the upper-hand against most of her opponents. She gained a reputation and admirers as well. Most notably, Fong Shaolin.
Her family had affiliations with the Fong family through a mutual agreement her great-grandfather had made with the head of the Fong's at that time. They were to play a sort-of 'Bodyguard' role to Yoruichi's family in exchange for a bit of financial support on their part. The youngest daughter, Fong Shaolin, ended up in Yoruichi's martial arts classes and idolized her style, working to become just like her. Yoruichi took her in as a sort-of younger sister and taught her a lot of her own techniques to help her skills develop. When Shaolin became strong enough, the two of them became a tag-team for 'recreational' fighting.
At the age of thirteen, she received a letter to attend the BFMI, but chose to put off attending for her own devices.
Because of reasons that she promised to keep secret, Urahara Kisuke was exiled. Yoruichi promised to help him escape from his pursuers. When she did, she left without telling her family or Shaolin. She left them under the pretenses that she had died in an accident involving a rival bunch of people who were jealous of her fighting skills. After successfully helping Kisuke escape, Yoruichi moved to a different city and lived under a pseudonym alone. No one knew where she was or what happened to her and she prayed that they would just forget about her.
At the age of twenty-seven, she recovered the letter to the academy. Because she had nothing better to do, Yoruichi decided to see if she could still validate it. After much arguing, she managed to convince the staff that they would be losing a valuable asset if they refused to let her in. Reading the roster of teachers, she discovered that Urahara Kisuke was an instructor along with a Soi Fong. After reuniting with Kisuke, the two rekindled a friendship that had been on the shelf for years and took up a job working in his candy store. As for Soi Fong, Yoruichi hasn't met her yet... She preferred leaving her in the dark until the time came.
Soi Fong
Originally born as Fong Shaolin, Soi Fong took her grandmother's code name upon entering the Factor as a student. She comes from a prestigious family linked to that of the Shihouin family, which is where her acquaintance with Shihouin Yoruichi began.
Like her five older brothers (now deceased), Soi Fong had immersed herself in the world of martial arts prior to enrolling the Bleach Factor, as part of a traditional curriculum of the Fong family. This is where she came to know Shihouin Yoruichi, who was a martial artist as well, and in many ways her mentor and Soi Fong took it upon herself to be much like a tag-team type partner, or a sidekick. They'd developed a tender, sister-like bond; however, that came to an end when Yoruichi disappeared from her life without leaving any notice. Since then, Soi Fong had devoted herself to training and perfecting all of her skills in the fields of martial arts and magic (namely poison) for the day she would once again meet Yoruichi.
At the age of thirteen, she was given a pamphlet on the behalf of the Bleach Factor Magical Institution, requesting her enrollment. The elders of the Fong house insisted that she did, and so that was that. She changed her name and became a student of the Factor.
After completing all five years with perfect scores, she continues to attend the school as a teacher, lending her pearls of wisdom. This is mainly because this is where she was reunited with Yoruichi, and even if she is still bitter and resenting the woman, the fact remains that Yoruichi is nevertheless important to her.
Urahara Kisuke
Kisuke purposefully tries not to mention any past affliations he's had in order not to be recognized as a former Seireitei resident. Not much is known about his biological parents (or even if he had any), but it has been discovered that he was a part of the nobility in Rukongai. While he does not emphasize his being apart of an aristocratic family, he gives off those subtle hints (the flamboyant gestures, the way he eats, etc.) that could eventually clarify someone's suspicions if they thought him to be in the upper class.
However, any official documentation has been destroyed & the only proof you might manage to get your hands on would be from the record books of the Urahara lineage that conveniently have disappeared recently from the Rukongai libraries. It is rumored that he does not speak of his past because he was exiled from his place of birth; this does have some merit to it but the reason for his exile is unknown.
Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly), very few have not heard of Kisuke's name in some form or another. His reputation as a businessman is rather well-known. He happens to have his own personal little 'delivery' service; an underground 'shop' where he personally has made his own products & sells them in deals in various forms. [Customers are bound by secrecy & contract not to discuss what he sells.] His works are of a magical nature, please ask personally to find out what is in his inventory. If you're referred to him by a friend of his then he automatically gives a discount. It brings in a little extra income & leaves him free to do his deals unmolested by authorities.
There are no known relatives (that are living) of his to be accounted for; instead, his one contact which Kisuke has associated with happens to be Yoruichi Shihounin. He has a rather strong bond with her because of their past together, though he does not say anything more than her having helped him when he was in need of allies (this relating back to the exile rumors). They were great friends even before his disappearance from Seireitei, & even continue to be so.
Urahara is an old bloodlineage of Shamanistic people; a proud & arrogant sort of folk who pride themselves on their Resurrection & Elemental powers. While all information regarding whom Urahara is linked with, apparently ties with the government lead to the betrayal of his clan & the disappearance of his family at a young age. He seems to be the only survivor of multiple assassination (possibly attempts, as this is yet to be discovered) instances, but will not under any circumstances discuss what happened in his childhood. Tragic or perhaps even traumatic experiences have the possibility of lurking behind his cool composure.
Zaraki Kenpachi
Zaraki Kenpachi - The brute of Goteijusantai. You can never imagine the agony of being nameless. How he suffered long ago, living in the streets of Zaraki Rukongai, the 80th sector. The land of thieves, prowling murderers, & godless fiends who were full of hatred - he was nothing short of a cur to them, a filthy orphan, a slave. He never knew his parents; if he did, he’d slaughter them & watch as they drowned in their own pool of blood. What cruelties he experienced here are so terrible that one could never fathom.
But he did not break. He didn’t scream.
Weakness would mean death. Fear was the key. Not his own fear, but his enemies. He’d exploit every weak point he could find, terrify those that would harm him. Strange as it was, how unlikely it seemed for a skinny little urchin to have hunger; he possessed a spiritual pressure so large that upon being angered it would engulf him in a swirl of golden aura, driving back the sprawling masses of unfortunate souls who challenged his life.
Shortly after this discovery he became a force to fear, to hate; his power became more refined & soon he developed his Zanpakuto. They had something in common, this zagged twisted thing. They were both nameless & alone. In order not to be murdered, he killed. Blood flowed as a river through his hands, on the edge of his blade. He came to enjoy it. To savor the carnage, the battles, the smell of death. It couldn’t touch him; earning him a reputation as the strongest fighter in Seireitei for generations.
Fate. A fickle mistress. She provided Kenpachi with something so rare: love. Love in the form of little hands, tiny feet, a smiling mouth and pink hair. Love with the promise of companionship. That day…When he saw her…He felt…Different. No longer so empty, so hateful. Innocence & purity: that’s what she allowed him to see. Love on the purest wings of corruption. It was that day that he named her. And himself. Yachiru Kusajishi & Zaraki Kenpachi. They were completely different; from two different realms of reality. What did it matter?
