Summary: Hanatarou's older sister sets him and Yachiru up on a date that ends up with neither of them knowing exactly what they're doing.
Hanatarou glanced around again nervously. He had been waiting for a while already, and it wasn't helping alleviate his anxiety in the least. Normally he would never have agreed to anything like this, wouldn't even have the idea come up, but his older sister had stopped by the house and decided that he 'really needed a date' and told him that she knew just the perfect girl...when he had tried to turn it down, knowing that it almost certainly couldn't end very well, she'd said that it was already set up, and told him when and where to go. It would have been rude of him to make his sister cancel, so he really couldn't do anything other than go, and hope that he could maybe spend the day without screwing up too badly.
He'd been sure that the time had been nearly an hour ago; he knew it was the right day, because he'd been worrying about it since she'd told him. He was so bad at talking to girls even when they were just being nice and speaking to him when he was working...and this time it would be a date with someone he didn't know. He hadn't exactly had very much experience with anything even resembling a date, let alone a blind date. He'd be trying his hardest to make sure that she would have fun, of course; it wouldn't be fair otherwise. But that didn't make him any less nervous...
Taking one more look around, he took a sip of water and set the bottle back down. If he really had gotten the time wrong and come an hour early, then she should be here soon...
She was pretty sure what had happened to her earlier might be described as an ambush. An ambush which involved much too much make up and clothing versus actual fighting.
Honestly! What was so important about this whole dating business anyways? Was it even profitable? It seemed like a big deal considering because of it her entire appearance had been teased within an "inch of perfection" as her roommate had said.
Anyways, she was supposed to meet um... what was her name again? R... m... p... whatever. Sister-lady said she wanted Yachiru to meet her little brother! That was all that was important!
So there she was at the cafe on the corner, and only an hour late!
Now... how was she supposed to find this guy again?
Still no sight of anyone who came anywhere near his table...Hanatarou shifted in his seat, taking another look around. He was supposed to be looking for pink...there weren't any people wearing the color sitting at any of the tables, and the couple of girls he'd seen who had been were most certainly not the one he was supposed to be meeting.
His heart beat a bit quicker when he caught sight of a flash of pink out of the corner of his eye, turning around in his seat. He doubted that it was who he was waiting for, but looking wouldn't hurt...wait, was that...? It had to be the girl he'd met at the Soul Society party, Yachiru. She was pretty distinctive, after all; it was hard to forget someone as energetic as her. He felt his cheeks flush slightly in embarrassment upon recalling the short interaction he'd had with her. He'd been flustered even before she'd taken out the switchblade...
Not wanting to stare, he turned back and looked down at the table once again. Still nobody who was wearing pink. Perhaps he really had gotten the time wrong. He'd feel terrible if he'd made her wait until she quit and went home simply because he had misremembered when he was supposed to arrive...
He had to be here, right? Exactly what was she supposed to be looking for again?
Yachiru frowned as she stood in the middle of the cafe, tapping her foot impatiently. She waited for a few minutes before deciding that if he wasn't going to find her she would just have to find him!
Now where to begin... maybe ask some people around the cafe? Right! That sounded like a good idea!
Without stopping to think about it Yachiru bounced towards the nearest table, and tapped at the glass in front of the guy sitting there.
"Excuse me! I'm supposed to be meeting someone here, you haven't seen anyone waiting around for anyone else, have ya mister?"
The next time he glanced around, he was surprised to find that Yachiru was still there, and actually seemed like she was waiting for someone. She'd probably made plans to meet a friend here; it seemed like a lot of people were meeting up here today...hopefully whoever she was waiting for would arrive soon; it wasn't much fun to wait.
There still wasn't anybody wearing pink, though. For a second the thought that maybe Yachiru was the one he was supposed to be meeting flitted through his head; after all, her hair was pink and that could maybe count, right? But he pushed the thought out of his head.
He couldn't help but keep watching when he saw her go up to a table close to her and start talking to the person sitting there. He couldn't hear what was being said, but then the man pointed at him. He felt his cheeks heat up. Oh no, he'd been caught staring...why did the silly idea that she might be the person he was supposed to meet get stuck in his head? Now she was probably going to think he was strange...
Yachiru cheerfully thanked the man for the heads up, before heading off in the direction that he pointed. Apparently there was a boy at table eight that had been waiting around for awhile now. How the man knew that she had no clue.
For some reason the boy looked familiar...
Yachiru glanced at him, trying to place his face, before simply shrugging and bounding over the last few steps and plopping down in an empty seat across from the boy.
"Hiya!" she grinned. "I think I'm supposed to meet you here."
She was almost certain she had met him before...
Oh no, oh no...She was walking over now. She was probably going to tease him or be mad, even though he hadn't wanted to be staring. It had just happened; he'd gotten curious when she'd walked over to that man. Would she believe him, though? She'd been really nice when they met the other time, but he wasn't sure if she'd be as patient with him this time...people don't like being watched, after all.
He could feel his blush deepen when she stopped to stare at him, then sat down right across from him. She...was supposed to meet him here? Really? That would mean that she was his-Hanatarou frowned. He didn't really know Yachiru that well, but he couldn't help but wonder where she might have been that his sister would have met her, let alone wanted to set her up on a date with him...
"A-ah, um...hi, Yachiru...how have you been?" Trying to look like he wasn't nervous enough that his heart was pounding, he picked up his water bottle and took a drink, looking down at the table.
He knew her name! That must mean she'd met him before! Right? Now only if she could remember his...
"I've been fine!" she beamed in response, still trying to think of the boy's name. For sure reason she thought it began with an 'H'... Henry? Harry? Haru? Hana... HANATAROU. THAT WAS IT.
Yachiru grinned, clearly pleased with herself.
"How've you been recently Hana-chan?"
Now she just had to figure out exactly what she was meeting him for.
He wasn't surprised when Yachiru seemed like she couldn't remember him as well as he could her; he rarely made any kind of impression other than maybe as quiet or clumsy, after all, and she must see a lot of people every day...
"That's good to hear." Hanatarou smiled at her shyly, toying with the water bottle as he set it down. Maybe he shouldn't have acted so friendly towards her right away, since they had only met that one time...but she didn't seem like she minded very much, so maybe it was okay?
"Me? I've, um, I've been all right..." She remembered after all...he'd forgotten about her nickname for him, and he tried not to let his slight surprise show. Yachiru was happy, it seemed, so at least she wasn't disappointed that he'd turned out to be the one she had to go on a date with...
"I'm, um, sorry if I kept you waiting..." He really should have caught on right away that she was the one he was supposed to be meeting, instead of looking for a coat or shirt even after seeing that she was obviously waiting for someone...hopefully she wouldn't be annoyed.
She was pretty sure it should be the other way around. Sure, she was earlier than normal, but Yachiru had still been an hour late. She knew because it was her new fastest time record!
"You don't need to apologize, Hana-chan! After all I was the one who was late!" she grinned, late for what she still wasn't sure but that was beyond the point.
"Anyways," she said, plopping down in the chair opposite him, "I'm glad to hear you've been doing well lately! How're your classes and stuff?"
She vaguely remembered him mentioning something about classes. At least she thought it was him, hopefully it was him.
"I-I suppose..." So he wasn't wrong about the time after all? That was good to know. He didn't really mind that she was late; it probably couldn't be helped, after all...and it wasn't like there wasn't still some of the afternoon and evening left. He should probably try not to be out too late, but in all likelihood that wouldn't be much of a problem. Hopefully Yachiru would at least have some fun today...
"They've been good! It's a lot of work, but I don't mind..." Laughing nervously, he looked over at the signs behind the counter. He probably shouldn't have any coffee, since it made him a little bit twitchy and he was already a bit anxious, but perhaps he should ask if Yachiru would like something.
"Would you, um, like something to drink?" If she said yes, it might be a bit interesting to see what kind of coffee she liked...if that time at the party was a good indication, then it might be something sweet. Plain black coffee was a bit bitter, though, so maybe she wouldn't like it?
A drink wasn't as important as figuring out why exactly Yachiru was here, the pink girl decided.
"Nah, Hana-chan! I'm fine for now!" she grinned. "I do have a question for you though!" she added, "Exactly what am I here for again?" she asked curiously.
"I mean, all these people this morning just came into my dorm and assaulted me! It was really scary!" she said, pulling a face. "They told me just to meet you here, though they really didn't say why..." she trailed off, before beaming at Hanatarou.
"So, exactly what is this whole thingy anyways?" she asked brightly, blunt as always.
As soon as she mentioned having a question, he couldn't help but feel a little bit nervous; usually whenever someone mentioned having a question instead of just asking, whatever it was that they were going to be asking wasn't a good thing...
She didn't know what she was here for? ...oh...and she didn't even really want to be here in the first place...
"U-um, I'm sorry...I thought that my sister would have told you, at the least...she, um, wanted to set us up on a blind date." He could feel his cheeks burning as he spoke, and he looked away. Poor Yachiru wasn't here for a date, she'd just been told she was supposed to come here and didn't even know why. And he'd made a fool of himself again...it was hard talking to girls at the best of times and she didn't even-
"I, uh...I'm sorry you came all the way here..." Hanatarou stuttered, toying with the hem of his shirt. Of course she'd be upset, who wouldn't be if they were tricked into going on a date? Hopefully she wouldn't be too angry with him for taking up her time like this...
A date? Yachiru blinked, the information slowly processing in her head, before she grinned brightly at Hanatarou.
"What're you apologizing for?" she asked brightly, "Your sister's kinda scary y'know," she nodded.
"Besides~! What's so bad about going out on a date once in awhile? Isn't it just what you American's call hanging out or whatever? I don't understand the whole fuss about it," she frowned, absently minded tapping on the table, trying to puzzle out the 'blind' meaning.
She grinned, the idea connecting in her head. Blind date, it obviously meant you weren't supposed to look at each other while you were together? But why would anyone do that? Americans were so weird.
Ah well, when in NYC do as the New Yorkers do!
Yachiru seemed cheered by this idea, "So, Hana-chan! Do you wanna catch a movie or something then?"
They wouldn't be able to see anything in a movie theater.
Why shouldn't he apologize? Maybe it was his sister who set things up, but he'd still made her wait and then apparently really surprised her with the fact that it was supposed to be a date...he'd been sure that had been what she'd said, but if Yachiru didn't know, did that mean he'd somehow totally misunderstood?
"I'm, um, sure she didn't mean to be..." As much as he wanted to disagree, he did find his older sister a bit intimidating himself. She only wanted to help, and he knew that, but...he didn't like it when she decided things for him like this. And it really wasn't fair at all to Yachiru either.
Right, Yachiru was still...he looked down to hide his blush, laughing nervously at her question.
"U-um, it can be like that, yeah..." If they spent a bit of time together doing things just as friends, then at least she wouldn't have wasted her time by coming out here, and that would be good...
"All right...erm, which movie would you like to see?" A movie...maybe that was the best; he'd probably have made a mistake with something else anyway...
Seriously, Hanatarou's sister was one of the scariest people Yachiru had met in her entire life. THE LADY HAD AMBUSHED HER WITH BEAUTY PRODUCTS.
It had been one of the most terrifying experiences in Yachiru's life.
Yachiru paused, thinking over the movie, running over the list of currently playing movies in her head.
"Hm..." she pondered over the idea, "Well, I don't really wanna see anything all mushy and stuff, those movies are no fun," she nodded.
"Maybe we should go see a horror movie? Something with a lot of blood and fighting and stuff!" she suggested brightly.
A...horror movie? Chewing on his lip, Hanatarou toyed with the bottle in front of him, taking a sip as he thought. He really didn't like those kinds of things, but he owed Yachiru for all the time that she'd taken out to come here, not to mention for his sister having set this all up in the first place, so he really shouldn't say no or ask about going to a different movie instead.
"U-um, well, I'm really not sure what's playing...is there anything like that?" It wouldn't be a bad thing if there wasn't. They didn't have to see anything romantic, since he couldn't really blame her for not having an interest in something like that. She really didn't seem like she was the type, after all.
It might be a bit nice to see a movie for once, even if it wasn't a type he liked; he hadn't gone to see one in years. Sometimes he would rent one, but it was usually something that his siblings wanted to see, and he'd study or be tidying up while it was on.
"Do you really like horror movies, Yachiru?"
Yachiru grinned at the mention of horror movies, her eyes glinting mischievously, "Horror movies are the best!" she proclaimed.
"I like scaring a bunch of people after we get out of the theater," she added cheerily, "People are always more jumpy after watching them for some reason."
As for horror movies in theatres right now... Yachiru thought for a second, before snapping her fingers.
"We should go see Saw 4!" she suggested cheerily, "It looked pretty good, after all! The first two weren't so bad either!" she beamed. "Though if this one is scarier it'll be way better!"
She liked scaring people coming out of the theatre? That wasn't really very nice, but it did seem like the kind of thing that someone as energetic as Yachiru might like doing.
"O-of course people are jumpy; horror movies are scary..." Hanatarou laughed nervously. He didn't really know all that much about the Saw movies, just that they looked really strange and violent. There was something with a doll, if he recalled correctly. But if Yachiru wanted to see it then it wouldn't really be fair for him to say no since they were going to a movie either way...it couldn't be too bad, could it?
"Okay...then, um...we'll see Saw 4." Smiling sheepishly at her, he took a sip of water before putting the cap back on.
"Would you like to go now, or wait for a bit?" Either way would be fine...he wasn't really trying to stall or anything, because he didn't want to inconvenience Yachiru, but if she wanted anything before they went then he could get it; it was only fair, after all...
“Let's go right now!" Yachiru replied cheerily, clearly excited at the idea of going to see the movie.
Horror movies didn't usually faze her at all. After all, the movies weren't scary at all, plus the violence was so unrealistic! Honestly, carrying a chainsaw around was tiring, it was much easier to shoot a guy! She would know at any rate.
"There's a movie theater right around here, let's go see if we can catch the next showing," she declared, pushing back her seat and bouncing to her feet.
"A-all right..." Smiling a bit anxiously at Yachiru, Hanatarou stood up as well. picking up his now-empty water bottle and placing it in the recycling can . So they would be going right away then? Maybe it would even be fun, since she was so excited about going...it couldn't be that scary of a movie, could it?
