Learning to Sew

HK Sewing Machine,
originally uploaded by bladepdx5.Three weeks into "Learn to Sew: The Series" class. Turns out I haven't forgotten everything from 7th grade Home Ec. So far, I like my machine. It had great reviews, and when I got it serviced, the guy didn't have to do very much to it (got the feed dog issue resolved, and there was a little hitch in the needle holder placement). I'm already planning to borrow another for when we get to buttonholes (my machine has a 4-step process, where most machines made in the last 40 years use a 1-step process). But for what I've done with it, and what I expect to do with it over the next 6 months at least, I think it'll be fine. And cheerful, too.
I've discovered I *love* my magnetic seam guide. Frickin' brilliant low-tech bit of engineering on someone's part.
I've also discovered that I need better lighting in my living/dining room. A different kind of bulb would go a long way, but I think I'm going to keep an eye out at Goodwill and maybe on Craigslist for a small/skinny floor lamp that would be relatively easy to stash when not in use.

The apron I made in class came out really well. I love the fabric I found for it - so much that I'm going back to see if there's more of it so I can make a short skirt. I've still got a bathrobe and top/bottom pajama set to go in class. Plus about a dozen other small projects of my own already lined up.

This is the fabric I used for the apron: sushi!
