[who are you and what have you done with char]

[It's the DARNDEST THING. If you've been paying attention to Char (lord only knows why you would want to do that), you might have perhaps noticed that he's been acting kind of strange ever since Green showed up. Oh, he's still stirring up trouble and backsassing his superiors, but there have been these peculiar episodes where he's... actually ( Read more... )

I've chosen THE LARGE I mean #3 [10/07] icequeen_aran October 7 2010, 23:27:00 UTC
Ah, Thursdays. With Biomech class over, Samus would normally be inclined to run back to the sanctuary of her firehouse now that her residency was no longer on campus. She generally didn't have a want or need to be here any longer than necessary.

However today she had some business with the library. This weekend Samus was going to go on an adventure, and if she had time to prepare for it, she was going to take advantage of that. While she considered the internet and other digital mediums to be a vastly superior form of researching, sometimes books still held their secrets.

So she made it a point to stop by the library briefly. Just to cover her bases. After browsing the aisles for a few minutes, she finally settled on pulling out a large book titled, "Kanto History: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly" and started thumbing through it. Char in the corner there eluded her sight for the moment but for how long...?

Char almost didn't notice Biomech, either. He was too busy gnawing his pen into oblivion and staring hopelessly down at what may as well have been a page of ancient cuneiform writing, for all the good it was doing him. Finally, he let out a frustrated sigh and looked up.

Oh, how about that. His favourite teacher. And those oh-so-sharp aerial predator eyes of his had no trouble making out what was printed on the cover of her reading material. ...Wait, was that right? What would someone like her ever want to know about his native region for? Did it have something to do with more Pokemon fighting rings?

"Hey, Biomech. Whatcha readin' about Kanto for?" Char called out. And probably earned himself some glares from librarians and tiny pikmens for being noisy. Oops.

"Business related reasons." She answered cryptically and quietly, closing the book with one hand. It was immediately discernible that Char was speaking to her but it took a second or two for her to realize that Char was speaking to her in the library. She looked over to make sure her ears weren't playing tricks on her.

There he was. Working out of... a notepad? And, that was definitely a text book. She half expected to see the former filled with crude drawings and other distractions but it looked like... he was actually trying to do school work? Possibly? Crazy. She did not try to hide her blatant eyeballing of his attempts at homeworking but said nothing to the matter. Not directly, anyway.

"You look comfortable over there." She started browsing the row again.

"Don't let that fool you none." Char tipped his chair back, stretching out his arms and wings alike. It was obvious that Biomech wasn't in the mood to be making small talk, but he gladly welcomed a distraction. After all the progress he'd made (read: none whatsoever), he deserved a quick break.

Besides, Biomech had sparked his curiosity. Business, huh? He was guessing she wasn't referring to the teacher kind of business with that. But what the hell would a bounty hunter possibly need in Kanto? Pokemon-inhabited regions tended not to be high-crime areas, save for the occasional team of extremist whacko scumbags. Ever since Team Rocket had cleared off, there hadn't been the kind of seedy activity that would call in the big guns.

"Y'know... if you're lookin' to find shit out about Kanto, y'might have better luck askin' somebody who grew up there."

While it sounded like a good idea Samus of course had her reservations--any questions she asked would probably be a dead give away of what her business related reasons might entail. Business that was none of Char's. FOR NOW.

Then again, maybe if she played her cards right...

The blonde kept her eyes glued to the shelf. "What part did you grow up in?"

"I was born in Oak's lab over in Pallet Town, but most of us end up leavin' the place pretty young. I hung out on Route 5 for a few years, between Saffron and Cerulean. Ended up spendin' most of my years on Route 10 over by Rock Tunnel, though."

He made no mention of why that was.

"Those're just the parts I know best, but I've seen all of Kanto. Anyone who's been with a trainer has."

The names sounded only vaguely familiar until she studied a map some more but she did note them for the mental map she was starting to create. Samus had made it a point to become familiar with Saffron however, along with Viridian. They were both her targets, after all.

Her finger rested on the spine of another book, 'Kanto Gym Leaders'.

"With Green?" She had also made mental notes of the readable conversations Green had with everyone on the network since he came back. Now that she thought about it, she thumbed through the book. Sure enough, the pretentious spiky-haired brat was in it. Listed under Viridian Gym leader formally Giovanni's Gym. How interesting.

"How long has he been a gym leader?"

"Not that long, compared to most of 'em. Just a bit over two years now." Char shrugged.

"The gym was empty for longer'n that, though. 'Bout three years, give or take? The league kinda got caught with their pants down -- the old leader just up and vanished outta nowhere right around the time Green became Champ." Which was true -- while Green was becoming Champion of the League, Red was busy being a Champion of Justice. "It was all over the papers, actually. I'd be surprised if even you hadn't heard about it, considerin' how many Pokemon live here."

"I've had no reason to make any of that my business." But that was quickly changing, especially since that information was readily available and as he said, all over the papers. All in books, all over the internet, right at her finger tips. Quite literally.

"Until now?"

It was a shot in the dark, but in all honesty, the Rocket scandal was the only big criminal thing Char could thing of. Or... really the only criminal thing, period. Samus liked to be frustratingly vague about her personal affairs -- Char was more than aware of that -- but she also wasn't the kind of person to tiptoe around something she wanted. If she was asking about Green and his gym, Char had a feeling it wasn't just for the sake of getting to know his trainer better.

If that really was the case, though... boy, was Biomech in for one hell of a wild goose chase. If she wanted Rockets, she was more than a little late to the party -- good luck hunting something that doesn't exist anymore. If she wanted the ringleader, then there wasn't much point in looking around Kanto. Char thought that would have been obvious. Char couldn't help but grin -- who would've ever imagined that Biomech would be so oblivious about something that he considered common knowledge?

"Until now." She confirmed, much against that grin. That infuriating I know something you don't know grin. Samus took a moment to reflect upon the questions she had been asking so far; it seemed like she might of been making Green out to be a target.

"I'm not after Green--Unless he's got a price on his head worth going after it'd be a waste of my time." Which also summarized her sentiments regarding Giovanni and Samus would probably continue to remain frustratingly vague about that, especially since Giovanni wasn't the only thing she was interested in over in Kanto.

"Don't need to tell me that, Biomech. I know he ain't involved in nothin' sketchy." Char dismissed the notion without a thought. Of course he would know if Green was up to no good -- his trainer might have been a lot of things, but he wasn't a criminal. Even if he was, it would have been futile to come to Char about it: he never would have squealed on Green.

"So what is it you wanna know, then?"

That was the question, wasn't it. At this point Samus had to decide if she wanted to potentially involve Char in this, even if by a string of knowledge, or blow him off and continue to do her own thing as planned. As it stood, he already had a string of knowledge that she was up to something.

"Nothing I probably can't find out on my own."

"Alright, suit yourself. Can't say I never stuck my neck out for you, though." Char shrugged, turning his attention back down to that oh-so-indecipherable textbook. She just wanted to make vague hints? Whatever. He had a... thing of some sort... due at... some point. Probably last week ( ... )

"Duly noted." She said, browsing the shelf one last time and pulled out a book on Silph Co. As expected, it hardly yielded anything she hadn't already skimmed over on the internet. How disappointing.

The blonde shifted her weight to the other leg and stole one last look at Char, still tempted to make some kind of smartass remark about his seemingly new-found work ethic but again, let it go. He wasn't antagonizing her, there was no reason for her to do the same.

Although she did decide to leave him with the parting words, "Good luck with your work." Said in a manner that implied she knew he would probably need it. Samus started to walk back the way from which she came.
