Here's a hodgepodge of canon panels of him.[Fanart for color]
To make this section short, there are a few details that don’t get across in pictures: the two main oddities of his features are the two least obviously expressed in image form. One, Hisanori never stops smiling unless he is alone in the presence of his younger brother (and even then, it’s rare). As for that occasion, it is never actually shown - all the audience receives is Yuki’s commentary such as, “You suddenly stopped smiling” and “Brother, shouldn’t you be smiling?” Aside from constantly smiling, Hisanori’s eyes are never clearly shown. They are always either hidden behind dark sunglasses or appear to be closed. His eyebrows, which are often partially visible even with his glasses, seem to be stuck in the same position as well - sloping down dramatically at an angle.
That doesn’t mean that he never shows emotions. If one watches his face closely, occasionally he’ll break out into a cold sweat or a vein will pop up when he is agitated. If things get very severe, it is sometimes even possible to see the muscles of his face straining to pull down his smile.
Personality:
A subdued and typically polite individual, Hisanori is a very sociable person. He’s a bit “off” at times, though - those with a good sense of perception can sometimes tell that he almost always has his own hidden agenda. Almost, as he isn’t a manipulative creep 100% of the time. Yukinori, his younger brother, describes the two of them as “villains” and expects Hisanori to plan and perform evil acts accordingly, but he occasionally does genuinely kind things for people and acts based on his personal fancies.
The motivations that Hisanori has for his actions are few: first and foremost, he and his brother want money. “Everything is for the sake of money,” he claims when Yuki questions a bizarre streak of uncharacteristically kind acts, “Not just the evil skills, but also the good deeds.” Because of this, while he is an antagonist, he is not completely wicked. He’s done everything from illegally dealing human organs to helping an elderly man cross a busy street.
Despite his claims, not quite everything is about money. Hisanori holds a grudge against the demon Nougami Neuro and wishes to someday outsmart him. For better or worse, though, he tends to end up siding with the troublesome demon for various reasons: sometimes it really is a more profitable route while others, the reasoning is much more personal. The motivation that overrides profit is the well-being of his younger brother. Hisanori is protective of Yuki, and if someone hurts Little Brother, Hisanori is prone to responding explosively. Literally. Like, with a rocket launcher.
The final main motivation behind Hisanori’s actions is personal preference. Every so often, rarely, he’ll go off and do something just because he likes it. This tends to absolutely baffle Yuki, who is technically supposed to know him more closely than anyone else but still rarely understands his thought processes. There are two non-money things in the world that Hisanori absolutely adores: cats and firearms.
No matter how illegal, dangerous, or expensive, Hisanori is almost always willing to splurge on firearms from handguns to machine guns to rocket launchers. He won’t hesitate to show them off, either - when helping an old man cross a busy street, Hisanori casually threatens nearby drivers by clearly brandishing a handgun.
Also, unexpectedly and to his brother’s annoyance, Hisanori loves cats. When he and his brother find a box of abandoned kittens, Hisanori protects them from Yuki and vouches to keep all but one of them (one was found to be a rarity that could be sold at a high price.). To the cats he shows a strange amount of sympathy and affection.
Hisanori also has issues with trust: essentially, he has been conditioned to distrust everyone to some extent with the sole exception of Yuki.
In other words, if you’re not exceptionally wealthy, Yuki, or a cat, you’re probably out of luck when it comes to Hisanori really, genuinely giving a damn about you. If he feels that someone is not worth his time, he can be very intentionally unpleasant and frustrating (but remain polite-sounding) when he wants to be.
A bad experience with Neuro (and others later, including HAL and Sicks’s “Five Fingers”) left Hisanori rather annoyed with the presence of strange powers in other individuals. He doesn’t necessarily seem to be jealous, but finds the existence of such things inconvenient. After all, Neuro crashed Hisanori’s plans and wouldn’t even grant him the satisfaction of being able to kill the demon, HAL caused widespread panic that ended up being bad for business, one member of the Fingers caused a flood that caused huge losses for some of the businesses that Smiling Face oversaw, and another of them attacked Yuki. In general, people with unusual powers just don’t sit well with Hisanori.
Oh, and he seems to have a thing for horror movies and enjoys a good smoke or drink every so often.
History:
Hisanori and Yukinori originate from an unspecified town that was in a constant wintery state. The boys were abandoned by their parents when they were young, so the two were forced to rely on each other to survive. The people of the town were said to be just as cold as the weather there: the brothers truly were left on their own.
One day, a disaster struck. A small avalanche buried the boys’ home while Hisanori was running an errand, and he returned to find that his brother was trapped under ice and snow and all other people would do was gawk at the sight. Against the advice of the crowd that had assembled, Hisanori rushed into the mound of snow and managed to retrieve Yuki. Mostly because of this incident, Yuki is extremely loyal to Hisanori and has promised to follow him unconditionally.
“We ran wild together for our own simple reasons,” Yuki described. This changed when Mochizuki, a former policeman turned businessman, found Hisanori and saw great potential in him. Hisanori accepted a job offer from Mochizuki on the condition that he could shoehorn his little brother into some kind of position within the company (which gathered and sold information.). The boss never seemed to care much about Yuki, so while Hisanori became the right-hand man, Yuki was left running errands and intimidating people.
It was at this point that things started to change drastically. Mochizuki essentially raised Hisanori, and he placed a strong emphasis on rank. He also made a move that would forever make the brothers’ relationship awkward. At the site of an assassination, Mochizuki told Hisanori to smile: he attributes the business’s success to his learning how to smile. The creepy new facial expression wasn’t the only thing that put a strain on the brothers’ relationship: because of their difference in rank, Hisanori forced Yuki to refer to him as “Mister Hayasaka” to mask their relation to each other. He also began to treat Yuki as something like a slave, constantly keeping secrets from him and taking his loyalty for granted.
Things changed dramatically after his involvement with the Demon World Detective Agency. Mochizuki and co hired the famous teen detective (and essential slave of Neuro) Katsuragi Yako to serve as a mascot. Believing that the information gathering group could bring Neuro more puzzles to solve, it was agreed upon and indeed quickly after an advertisement aired, someone had a mystery for Neuro to munch on. That was what Hisanori and Mochizuki claimed, at least - it was a lie.
An enormously messy pile of plans began to clash with each other at this point. Mochizuki and Hisanori planned to frame Neuro and Yako for smuggling cocaine, Yuki and Hisanori planned to hire Godai, the Demon World Agency’s thuggish “odd jobs man,” to betray the agency, and Hisanori by himself planned to assassinate Mochizuki and take over as head of the information-gathering company. Every single one of these plans was completely torn to shreds by Neuro.
The climax of the incident occurred when Hisanori opened a crate of drugs looking for “something black.” From there he pulled an impressive collection of heavy weapons. As he sat atop the crate like a throne and declared his new position, Neuro put on a small show of strength by showing that he was stronger than an average person and had immunity to bullets that intimidated Hisanori to the point that he began to mentally break down. Frightened, confused, and enraged, Hisanori resorted to the only defense that he had left at that point: he shot off a rocket to self-destruct and ideally take Mochizuki, Neuro, and Yako along with him. Instead, the other three escaped and Hisanori was trapped in a fire by himself.
Mirroring the incident with the avalanche, Yuki entered the blaze and saved his older brother. Among the flames, Yuki confronted Hisanori about the greed that had taken him over and made him into a different person. Along with this, he also promised to continue following his older brother no matter what. With Yuki supporting him, Hisanori limped away from the site of the explosion already scheming.
The brothers, working together as a team now, established the company “Smiling Face Ltd.” The company specializes in smuggling while particularly working with weapons and human organs. It also holds “partnerships” with other companies which the brothers tend to control with a collective iron fist. With the establishment of Smiling Face, Hisanori’s appearance and disposition changed. He became more relaxed and passive, and his looks became less formal (although he still hasn’t been seen wearing anything but black suits.). Most importantly, he began to treat Yuki with some respect and has stopped keeping secrets from him.
The second time Hisanori met with Neuro, he immediately pulled a gun on the demon (with no regard for the startled people around him.). The two made a deal even with the tension and Neuro paid the brothers precious gems and the promise of affiliation in exchange for a black market military helicopter which was used to access the brainwashing program HAL’s base.
Neuro bought the gems that were used to buy the helicopter using Yako’s money which left her in a huge debt. Knowing that they have a talent for acquiring large sums of money quickly, Yako consulted the Hayasaka brothers to find a way to make five million yen. Hisanori kicked off the conversation by noting that his grudge was still going strong, saying that it was “particularly unfortunate that [Yako] didn’t drop dead for us alongside HAL.” He lightens the conversation shortly after and offers to help Yako. By “help,” Hisanori meant “give horrible suggestions.” He recommends pawning off organs through his company, then prostitution. To his amusement, Yako becomes frustrated and leaves.
The brothers at this point became background characters and were shown exclusively in short anecdotes unrelated to the main story. These usually served to point out Hisanori’s cleverness and Yuki’s strength.
One anecdote shows the brothers on an average day in which Yuki notes that his brother is “acting funny.” Hisanori proceeds to help an old man cross a street and rescue abandoned kittens. When questioned, he points out that the old man is the president of a wealthy company who now owes the brothers a favor and one of the kittens was a rare male calico.
In another, Yako offers Hisanori potentially drugged (By Neuro of course) Valentine’s Day chocolate. Hisanori is shown lounging on a sofa while Yuki attacks a group of businessmen. Nonchalantly watching his brother assaulting several people at once, Hisanori explains over the phone that the brothers are very busy disciplining a company that they were involved with. He also surprisingly and correctly predicts that the chocolates could be drugged, as he doesn’t trust Neuro.
Most recently, the brothers have been brought back to the front lines. Yuki was attacked rather viciously by Kasai, one of the “Five Fingers” of the villain Sicks during an indiscriminate arson. When Hisanori found out about this, he was enraged. The brothers made a surprise appearance and Hisanori shot a rocket directly at one of Kasai’s cohorts who had just arrived to assist him. At this point, Hisanori is cooperating with the police in order to surround and capture Kasai.
Strengths:
Hisanori’s strengths are basically Yuki’s weaknesses.
Hisanori is essentially the “brains” of most of the activity that he is involved in. He’s sharp, he’s logical, he’s patient, he’s polite. His business sense is simply second to none, as is his knack for getting away with crimes. He excels at spying, mimicry, and forgery. He is also surprisingly cooperative when he wants to be.
As for strength in combat situations, Hisanori knows how to use firearms and explosives effectively. He particularly has a fondness for handguns and rockets.
His greatest asset in any situation, whether simply going about business or getting into trouble, is his bond with Yuki. The brothers essentially “complete” each other, filling in the gaps of the other’s weakness.
Weaknesses:
Yuki’s strengths are basically Hisanori’s weaknesses.
Although he’s the older and larger of the Hayasaka brothers, Hisanori is the physically weaker one. He’s not in terrible shape but he’s nowhere near as strong as Yuki: without a firearm or explosive in hand, he just can’t stand up against others in a fight. Most of Hisanori’s potential to be physically powerful was lost when he was taken in by Mochizuki, as he became a bit spoiled by having underlings available to perform his dirty work.
It’s not just physical weakness that’s a problem for Hisanori - he also has the disadvantage of losing his cool if he gets backed into a corner. If Hisanori feels trapped or his plans fall apart, he completely freaks out and will often make things much worse for himself by taking insane, nonsensical courses of action (including but not limited to trying to blow himself up).
First Person Sample:
As much as I’m sure that everyone is enjoying their lovely vacation so far, I’m afraid that these arrangements just aren’t working out for me as they are. We’re busy people, most of us, and I have to say that taking such long breaks unannounced is terrible for business.
I suggest that anyone who agrees with me kindly lets our dear captain know about our proposed change in plans.
Yes, we should definitely let him know. Make sure to tell him in a way that he can understand - you may have to speak up for him to hear you.
[To his brother:]
I have the feeling that we’re going to have to make a lot of noise before this is over, Yuki. I trust that we as brothers can be loud enough to get our point across before things get too far out of hand.
Third Person Sample:
Hisanori was in a particularly good mood today! He always appeared to be that way, of course, but it wasn’t always the truth. This time, though, his expression was completely accurate. He had been thinking about something (or more accurately, plotting), and whatever ideas were swirling around in his head pleased him.
The elder Hayasaka lounged cooly, legs crossed and a half-empty glass held so gently and delicately that it looked like even the slightest touch could send it tumbling to the floor. He was so content, so smug, that it no longer seemed to even matter that he was stuck in the endless, questionably safe reaches of space and involved in some shady trip that he didn’t remember signing up for. In fact, that was the exact point that he was pleased with, right down to the suspiciousness of the whole operation! Hisanori could conclude on his own that since no one (that he knew of) explicitly recalled purchasing tickets for this trip, every single person there had been taken without permission (meaning that they had all effectively been abducted), meaning that this was all either one-hundred percent illegitimate or was part of some insane conspiracy to get rid of a few people.
Whether it was one or the other really didn’t make a difference to Hisanori, although he could definitely get behind a cause that would send that investigator girl’s monster of an associate far, far away. The main point that mattered was that whoever was running this seemed to want to keep it a secret. Hisanori loved knowing other people’s secrets.
It might have been an optimistic point of view, but Hisanori viewed almost everything about this trip to be a potential gold mine: the ship itself right down to the little kitty shaped ball that he used as a cellphone could all undoubtedly fetch a decent pile of cash on the black market. It couldn’t hurt to take a few souvenirs. Or one big souvenir, if he was feeling ambitious.
When wasn’t he? In a smooth motion, he finished off his beverage and feeling quite satisfied with the state of things.
Oh yes, it would be his.
