Surgery update

Aug 05, 2008 21:37

My surgery is still scheduled for Aug. 25. However, the hospital called today to let me know that my insurance will pay $2,000 and I will need to pay the other $43,000 (yes, they'll pay around 5%).

I need ideas; I don't have that kind of money, especially with Jordi starting college & having just bought a house.

HELP!

There is a new specialty of self-employment where entrepreneurs use their expertise with The System to help plain folks navigate through the Insurance Benefits System. If there is such in your area, run, do not walk, to them. Your deductible cannot possibly be that high. And since they are willing to cover something, it is obviously not an uncovered procedure, and therefore must be subject to your deductible limits.

Now, in case I'm very wrong (a definite possibility):

Talk to the hospital about a payment plan. See if there are any ways you can cut the cost -- maybe there are cheaper (but equally usable) anesthetics, maybe you can recover at home sooner ... Not knowing enough about either medicine or your procedure, I can't be more specific. But your doctor and the hospital can.

Also, make sure you're mentioning all this in any applications for financial aid for Jodi's college. If you have to, call the Financial Aid office of the college directly; this kind of thing definitely feeds into the calculations of ability to pay/need sides of the financial aid packaging.

Good luck! This is awful!
