We are imperfect, but he doesn't punish us--we choose where we want to go. See, some people believe that Hell isn't that bad. All Hell is is a place where God is NOT. Which is terrible beyond belief--to know that there is this amazing heaven, and you chose not to go there. But nobody is punished for doing things, we are given a set of rules, by which we can choose our destiny. If you do something wrong, but are remoseful of your actions, then God forgives you. It's not like "Oh, you just fucked up bad. Hell for you."
God's intentions and thoughts are not able to be comprehended by humans, and you have to see this from a hypothetical perspective--assuming that there IS a God, of any sort, by nature He is simply a higher being. So if a God exists, no matter how benevolent then we would never be able to comprehend his thoughts. You said His nature, though--that is actually the purpose of religion and spirituality--to know His nature better, and be a better person for the world. See, once your saved, it doesn't end there--we have to start making the world a better place for everybody. There's alot of concepts of religions that people cannot have explained to them, but I think it's absurd to give up the search for truth.
...and I think the search for truth begins with abandoning faith.
You say "All Hell is is a place where God is not." I don't think that place would be any different from this one. And your take on punishment isn't, as far as I know, really compatible with the biblical God. In the bible, as far as I can tell, it is punishment.
Religion, to me, just doesn't seem like it has any real relevance anymore. And that's not the only logical problem I had with God, there are a whole lot more. The whole incomprehensible nature thing, also...I'm not going to sit here and type all of these out, but we should talk about it sometime.
Apparently you heard wrong. It's only considered punishment because it's from the standpoint of those who want to be with God forever in eternal bliss. Satan does not agree with this apparently. What you refer to is called "The Angry God of the Jews". It was how they saw him. If a city was blasted, then it was God being really pissed. God does not act out of irrational anger, they just percieved it that way. God places us here for a choice--not reward and punishment. Looking to the common churchgoer to find absolute truth in theology is rediculous. Some people just want be able to comprehend it, or just don't want to. I have some questions about Christianity that I cannot have answered by any of the Priests or other clergy that I know. I would have to find a very knowledgable theologian.
We could talk about this sometime, if you went to Del Mar or lived in Rockport.
