Sometimes A lot of times the comments in the Gothamist outright scare me. http://gothamist.com/2008/03/11/harlem_rezoning.php

I went to the Fulton Street branch of The Strand yesterday. I'd heard that they were closing one of their branches but the last time I heard any talk of it was at least a year ago. But its true. It looks like they are going to be out by sometime in September and it blows it blows it blows. They lost their lease because the owner of the building raised the rent astronomically. Its all too common a story at this point. The thing is, once a place like The Strand is gone, I just cannot imagine another place like that EVER coming back. I perused the (50% off!) books among the hundreds of bookshelves and sat down on the floor and read one. I looked around at the old wood, the linoleum floor tiles, the space upon space occupied by shelves upon shelves of books and thought to myself..."This is another world. This is like sitting on a linoleum tile in the past, a world that is going away and will never come back." I think its a shame, and I feel helpless, as so many other people must feel helpless.

I cannot imagine what will fill that void...but whatever it is, it won't be the glory that was that branch.
