Man.

I am so fucking fortunate. I don't know if I've ever looked at my life and said, "Dammit, I'm so fucking lucky."

I got to see Steel Train perform.

When I was dropped off at Emo's (venue), I was going to walk into the lounge room to make sure that that's where it was going to take place, and as I was approaching the door, it opens and who walks out but the one guy I was going to know at the show. Fucking Evan from Steel Train.

We'd been messaging each other back and forth on MySpace during my month of no good. He knew almost every single thing that was bothering me that month. I also found comfort in their new album, which was slowly being released throughout that month.

The instant we recognized each other (pretty much right away), I went in to shake his hand and instead he pulled me in for a hug. A hug. Sweetest thing ever.

Of course, I was a bit tongue-tied and caught off my guard at the same time so I stuttered for a little while.

Then Scott walked up and Evan said, "Hey Scott, meet my friend Victor", which was pretty much how he introduced me to people that night.

Then Daniel showed up, and he wasn't very talkative.

Then a small group of girls walked up to us and asked us, "Is this where the Steel Train show's going to be?" Classic.

Then Jack. Jack was really nice. We talked about McAllen and how they played at a hotel or church the one time they were down here. And I reminded him how they were supposed to come back but there was a stabbing and the club they were supposed to be playing at closed down.

At the end of the show he told me that they were going to make sure to hit up McAllen on their next tour in January. "Just for you, man." I told him, as a joke, to do it for my birthday on January 31st, and he said that they will. He told me, "I'll see you in a couple of months." We'll see.

Scott's cool. We talked about UT, film, Wes Anderson, and Robert Rodriguez. And how he was the original Young Simba in The Lion King on Broadway.

After they finished performing, I walked up to Jon (drums), Evan, and Jack and gave them all hugs and thanked them for such an amazing performance. I don't think I gave Scott one, but that's because he was around a lot of people. I didn't give Daniel one because he didn't seem very social, so I kept my distance, lol.

When I told Evan I was going to leave already (I had stayed around for some time afterwards) he said, "Make sure you say goodbye to everyone."

I'm lucky because none of this would have been possible if my boss had not agreed to drop me off in Austin on the way to Dallas and if Travis had not been able to pick me up and host me at his apartment and if there wasn't a bus that would get me to Dallas in time for the Emmy's and if Jordan wasn't going to be able to pick me up at the Greyhound in Dallas and if Steel Train wasn't going to be at the right place at the right time. . . I'm just lucky.

I'll say it now, and I'll try to keep true to it, but next time Steel Train is in Texas, I'll make every effort to attend. The bus ticket to meet back up with the rest of R2R in Dallas cost me $33. The show cost $10.

I originally wasn't going to go. Steel Train was going to be in San Antonio on Oct. 27th, but then R2R was nominated for two Emmy's, which were going to be presented in Dallas on that same. fucking. night. The only other nights I could see Steel Train were the night before (Fri. Oct. 26th) in Austin, which I didn't want to because that would mean asking to be dropped off on the way to Dallas and missing half the trip with R2R (our car rides are usually a lot of fun). They were going to be in Dallas the night before that (Thurs. Oct. 25th), but that wasn't going to happen because I had class that day.

But you know what. I told myself, "Steel Train means a lot to me right now."

I'm beyond glad I went.

Setlist: Black Eye, I Feel Weird, Kill Monsters in the Rain, School Is For Losers, Firecracker, A Magazine, Alone on the Sea, Road Song, Gypsy Waves, Better Love, Dakota. I think that's it.
