The intelligent humble me.

So I spent all day saturday meeting Electrical Engineering Alumni and Professors from the past 100 years at the UW (it was the Electrical Engineering Centenial after all).

Basically, from 10:00am until 9:00pm I was immersed in intelligent conversation, demonstrations, and lectures. After hours spent wandering the labs and meeting young and old engineers alike, I had the privelege of watching a presentation by a vp for IBM who spoke about the future of computing.

I'll fill you in on a little secret. The frequency of your cpu will soon no longer matter as much as the architecture of your system. For example, the Cell chip that will be used in the Sony PS3 can perform at approximately 250 gigaflops, or 1/4 of a teraflop. To give you some idea of just how fast that is, most super computers work at about 3-5 terraflops (while the most recent super computer built, using Cell-like architecture, was able to reach a speed of a little more then 70 teraflops).

Gosh it was exciting. I got to speak with the presenter afterwards and even ran a few ideas for cooling servers by him, all of which apparently had been tested.

But yeah, talk about rekindling my desire to be a CE major.
