I stumbled across this game, 'Eschalon: Book I', and despite the terrible title and the pre-planned trilogy aspect, I was quite interested. A pretty, old-school RPG with turn-based movement and combat, self-styled 'unlimited character development' and a 'non-linear storyline ( Read more... )

Aw, man, that's just weak. I mean, if there are specific romance-related subplots, I can see certain things going in complex paths depending on that (even if the same characters are potential romances, they're gonna act differently depending on the character's gender!) so it's not as easy as a search-and-replace for pronouns... and yeah, if there's a bunch of modelling work done for various armour bits and all... but still, it's kind of crazy to imply that the main character can vary in practically every fashion except gender. I mean, I can think of vast differences which are more important than that. (It's a personal challenge to play characters in CoH who are that different.)

Ah well, there are games which manage this just fine.
