Creatures of the dark and beasts within
For reasons I will not go too far into the subject of werewolves has been brought to my attention once again, and of course it got me thinking; what is it about the whole werewolf/vampire mythos that attracts us so? I think of course you have to really seperate the two to fully understand.
Werewolves, children of the moon, normal by day, ravaging beast by night. I think these beasts of myth much like the comic hero The Hulk, all deal with that beast within duality. The primal rage and anger to lash at that witch has done us wrong in one way or another. That desire to strip off the trappings of normalicy and step into the primal freedom of base emotion. Perhaps that's it most of all...freedom. No I am not about to launch into a Gibson-esq speech about the topic, but it is one of the things that seems to drive us on and on. We all desire freedom, from responsability, from accountability, from the day to day bullshit we endure as pat of the human condition, and these beasts of force are that symbol we can all identify with. And then we have the romantacizm of the whole thing, the tormented soul, the put upon being who must endure this awful curse. The howling at the night, danger ridden life they must endure (save the hulk who just went nuts at the drop of a hat) Of course the romance angle is just another way that the mainstream puts on these mythical figures to return them to nomalcy, or at least that's my take on them.
And now to the other creature of night; the Vampire. Again here is a monster romantacized by its "torment". Always alone in its life, always striving for that one love that would bring meaning to it's existance. Kept in the darkness, repelled by symbols of God, this tortured being is shunned by all that is "good" in the world. Perhaps that the attraction; The Bad Boy angle. For women its an attraction, for guys it's the desire to attract ;) . A life full of violence and death, and to find that one woman, or man (let's be fair right...ohhh I think I'm gonna hurl) that could end all the ugliness of it, and because they will be in an eternal love, killing people for food will be a-ok! LOL sorry.
But that's just my take at the moment....give it five and I'm sure it will change ;)
