Do the Evolution

I watched a PBS special on the evolutional history of dogs.  I've always wondered why there are so many different varieties of one animal.  The special introduced some interesting theories about how dogs evolved from wolves.  What's so fascinating is all of this evolving has happened in a span of 10,000 years or less.  And the the main theory they proposed makes sense.  The structure of DNA can be changed by hormones in the body.  Because animals in captivitiy use less adrenaline, the genes within DNA can be turned on and off accordingly.  Different "breeds" of dogs were formed because certain dogs were valued higher than others.  If a dog had longer legs in Egypt for instance, it would be more valued in hunting.  If you continue to value dogs with longer legs, you will inevitably have dogs with longer legs than those many generations before.  It's just a dumbed-down version of the genetic engineering dog breeders do today.  It makes me think about how much human beings have changed in that same span of time and what we'll be like a thousand years from now.
